How do I break the news to someone I’m autistic who completely refused to believe I had it before I was diagnosed?

She said there was no chance of me having it and strongly believed her opinion was right, refusing to think otherwise. I found it hurtful when I was being tested for it because I found her behaviour completely unsupportive. I think it may be important I confide in her about it because she helps people like me get into employment as shes like a social worker who works with people who experienced mental illness. my condition will most likely affect what job ill get.

Doubt it will affect much at all you aren’t exactly low functioning so if you dont mention it they will probably never notice. Anyway show her the letter you got to confirm it or get one sent to her by your GP

Such diagnosis, why is it important. You lived somehow before it, why would anything have to change after?

I have lived before the diagnosis but my condition has affected my life a lot. I got bullied badly at school because I was different, failed two acedemic years because of not having the right support and cudve done better at school. I have struggled with building relationships, friendships and been a lot whilst my siblings have gone off living their lives Ive struggled tremendously which meant living a lone and being a lone feeling isolated. Ive struggled getting a part time job because struggle to use initiative and adapt to being in new environments. I cant handle coping being in areas i don’t know. I struggle with independance and would find it too hard to live on my own.
so many people think im fine but so FEW understand what its like. its so hard.

My best advice is to tell the person gently, then walk away. If they were unsupportive before, it is very unlikely that an official diagnosis will improve their attitude. Some people just lack empathy.

You need to surround yourself with people who are more supportive. There are other people who can help you get a job, and other people who will believe you when you tell them there is something wrong without downplaying your perceptions.

Florence I had no idea you are autistic. I think mai1s is right, show her something in writing from the doctor. Not everyone with autism is non-communicative. Yours is probably a mild case. Maybe she doesn’t realize that it’s non an all-or-nothing disease. There are people in between who are still affected. Anyway I wish you the best. You’re always so sweet and helpful to people in their posts.
