area = 1/2 base x height
64 = base x height (both base and height must be 8, as this is an isosceles triangle)

hypotenuse = square root of 8 squared + 8 squared
= square root of 128
= 11.31

perimeter therefore = 8 + 8 + 11.31
= 27.31

What you don’t know is that I’ve given him the wrong answer! But no, he probably didn’t have the method explained to him particularly well. You’re right, though, I probably should’ve picked an example with different figures so as not to spoonfeed him; I wasn’t thinking.
