I am 47 years and have never had a mutual best friend,

i have a few friends, but their “best friend” is always someone else.

I have been there too. Does you best friend have to be female? It turned out for me that my BFF is a man. He understands me better than a woman would and will take my secrets to the grave. He is not my husband either, though my husband knows about him.

I think part of your problem can be found in your question. Why this focus on “best”? Friendship is not a competition. All that you can control is being the best type of friend that you are capable of being. Everything beyond that is out of your control and therefore, not worth worrying about.
