Total Freedom Redux
A lot of people got the wrong idea from my previous post, “What would you do with total freedom?” i.e. they focused on possible problems of an extended lifespan or on what dangerous stunts you could do if you’re invulnerable to physical injury. I believe this was a result of my not explaining what was intended. Let me see if I can state the conditions better this time.
1. No aging for a long time. Your lifespan and youth have been prolonged enough that you have time for long-term goals, within the realm of human possibility. Your remaining natural lifespan has been increased by a few decades (you don’t know exactly how much).
2. Reduced danger of accidental physical injury or disease. This doesn’t mean you’re physically invulnerable, just that you’ll usually get lucky in an accident and wind up OK. If you’re doing something deliberately reckless with a high chance of killing you, you can still die. But, for example, if you want to go hiking in the Himalayas, you don’t have to worry as much about freak storms killing you (provided you checked the weather reports and planned a time when no storms were expected).
3. Some benefactor has provided you with a fund that you can modestly live off of for the rest of your life (you can’t spend it all at once).
So, basically, you are free to do anything you want for the rest of your life, within reasonable human limits. Now, what would you do with your freedom:
1. This decade?
2. This month?
3. Right now?
I’m not asking what you would do with the rest of your life–only how would the freedom affect your current decisions and plans.
Examples:
Long term:
Would you keep your job? Get more education? Work for a noble cause? Go on vacation? Stay with your significant other? Go into politics?
Short term:
Would you surf the internet? Go for a hike? Buy a motorcycle? Have a sandwich? Sell your house? Go dancing?
