Last night the tree in my back yard was split in half through the trunk by heavy winds.

Does this mean that the tree has to be cut down?

About 3/4 of the tree is still standing, but I am unsure if the tree will continue to live. I know that when limbs are cut a tree is okay, so I wasnt sure if a tree split through the trunk would be able to continue to live. Also, the stability of the tree is in question. I am going to call a professional tomorrow to find out. Just thought someone here might have had this happen and knew the answer :)

Hi there. I don’t know much about trees, but I have one in my garden that is almost hollow through the bark due to bugs. An expert told me that firstly you have to be sure it is safe so it’s a good idea to cut back some branches to prevent the extra weight from stressing the trunk more. Then you need to treat it with some anti fungicide and perhaps seal the exposed bark with tar. Bit like a wound on your flesh really.. antisceptic and dressing!. You can get iron ties which ratchett around the bark to help it to remain stable.

At the end of the day, it’s wise to call in a professional and make sure the tree is not likely to fall. If it’s safe enough, you can try rescuing it.

Even if it does die, don’t give up on it as an interesting garden feature. Dead trees can be a haven for wildlife.

Good luck !
