Computer Terms :: Cloud Computing

Can someone help me with a computer term: What is “the Cloud“? Does this really exist or is it just some imaginary concept? If it’s not real, then why do people talk about it? Is it all just a bunch of hot air?

If it does exist: Where is it? I’ve written a blog post about this and would love to hear your responses (either here or at the blog — or perhaps even at both ;D).

Thanks!

Does it matter b> i>which /i> /b> computers these are hooked together — or b>what i>kind /i> /b> of connection it is? Or are we using “cloud computing” technology by using help.com?

AFAIK,, the wikipedia article *ALSO* states that it’s not a clearly defined term (and is quite controversial.

To me it sounds like you feel that cloud computing *is* definitely a “real” concept.

Is there only *one* cloud or are there *many* such clouds? I have usually heard the term “cloud” used as a “singular” cloud — but the way you use the term gives me the impression there might actually be more than one cloud.

For example, at Purdue University an “HPCC” was installed earlier this month (see a href=”http://education.zdnet.com/?p=1655″>ZDNet /a>) — would that be *ONE SEPARATE* cloud, or part of some larger, *INTERNET* cloud?

So the way you see it, people who speak of storing information in “*the* cloud” actually *OUGHT* to be saying that they are storing information in “*a* cloud” — is that right?
