Microsoft Windows help: Begin at the beginning. - Help.com

Begin at the beginning.

I plugged in my ipod to get some new podcasts.
Itunes informs me there’s a software update for my ipod.
Update downloaded.
Whoops! I can’t use my ipod with itunes until I download a new version of itunes.
New version of itunes downloaded.
Whoops again! When I try to install new itunes, I can’t, because I don’t have Service Pack 2 for Windows XP.
Try to get SP2.
Can’t because my version of Windows isn’t validated and I’m clearly evil and Microsoft hates me.

Upshot, am now stuck with an iPod I can’t do anything with, and a real desire to beat Bill Gates and Steve Jobs with a big stick with a nail in it.

My computer died last year, and a friend fixed it, and it’s possibly not an official copy of Windows.
Apparently SP2 is the reason my computer died (and I lost everything), so do you have any tips on downgrading the iPod’s firmware?
