friends help: I am drowning. - Help.com

I am drowning.

I am self-employed and must work hard to pay bills. No friends.(no time) No family.(they died when I was young). I need to sell my house. It is large and needs repair. To pack it up and to put it up for sale will take weeks of full-time work that I do not have. My son is quite ill. He gets any spare time that I have. The packing of this 4,000sq.ft. home full to overflowing is daunting. The old century house is unhealthy. Many mice. Mold. Many repairs. Also, VERY hard to sell as we have a rooming house with drugs on one side and crazy, old person on the other. (really quite crazy, spays water on visitors, etc.) I can barely afford bills, (in fact I can’t, bill collectors call daily), but if the house doesn’t look well for the sale, I will get nothing out of it as it is completely mortgaged.

My stress is so high I feel sick daily and can’t sleep. I fight back tears all day yet must go on.

Hang in there! What a terrible situation to be in. Which country to you live in? Do you employ anyone to work for you (you said you were self employed). What type of work do you do? Have you spoken to any estate agents to see what the house would be worth in its current state?

I am a social worker. Helping others all day long. Others who too often do not even know what real problems are. Who I would just like to shake sometimes. I am in Toronto and yes I have learned that to put the house up as is would just about pay off what I owe on it and leave us with nothing and in need of much storage. I can no longer afford to employ anyone. My mortgage is $3,000 monthly. Everything else comes after that. thanks though.

Ok, I don’t want you to give up. Have you been to speak to your bank about your financial situtation? Have you considered declaring yourself bankrupt or insolvent? I’m not sure what support is available in Canada (I’m in the UK) but i’m sure there must be someone (through your line of work) that could help you to get straight. Have you considered getting a different job? or a second job? I know things are overwhelming right now but you need to take things one at a time. You’ve mentioned a few times that you’ve got a lot of stuff, perhaps a garage sale/car boot sale/put things on ebay? just to get some extra cash.

thanks. to be sure I have thought of all of these things. it is unlikely you will be able to come up with anything I have not already thought of. It is what I do for a living. but you are sweet.

I feel the need to apologize for not being able to help you. I’m writing this but, like Bex, I feel powerless. If good energy can flow between people and between continents, then I hope mine arrives to you in a way that some windows and doors start to open in your life.

Even so, I feel that you’re a strong person (stronger than I, for sure) that’s has faced many hurdles in life, and that may just keep you a float. Keep fighting, keep being strong (even if a tear is dropped from time to time), never give up hope!

That sounds terrible…I would love to help, but I don’t really know what to do. If you’re in Quebec, I know you can get some financial support and also some help for your son if he is ill, so that you don’t have to worry about medical bills as much.
I know there are also some associations that come in anonymous aid of people who need it. I wish you the best of help. Keep it going.
