work help: How often should I keep my laptop plugged in? - Help.com

How often should I keep my laptop plugged in?

I’ve just bought a new laptop, I’ve read the manual but at one place they say ‘Keep it plugged in at all times’ and at another place it says ‘Unplug when battery is 100% full’ to avoid explosion/ignition etc. I work next to the plug all the time so I’m wondering if:

1) I should unplug it when the battery gets 100%
2) Always keep it plugged in no matter how much battery charge left (this can be several hours).
3) Keep the batteries removed and put them in only when working away from house.

Any ideas?

How long did you have it for, and do you keep the batteries in all the time?

I leave mine plugged in all the time too. I’ve had it almost 2 years. Nothing has ever happened.

Lucky when was the last time you used up your batteries? I’m curious.

1) I should unplug it when the battery gets 100%

i keep doing it, plug, unplug, plug….

my old vaio used to be plugged 24/7 and now when i unplug it the battery never lasts more than half an hour even with power save mode!

but with my new toshiba, I only plug it when necessary (4 out of 10 times), and the battery last for almost 3 hours (with the power save mode)

I think mine can last 4 hours right now if I’m only running the one/two programs I need to use. I’ve decided to take the batteries out and put them in the bag, and only put them back in when I’ll need to use them.

Yesterday my laptop overheated ( i have a very hot room) causing my laptop to shutdown. i Immediately tried to turn it back on, but nothing happened. I thought i had fried th mother board. Turns out it wouldnt cut on because for some reason the battery being in along with the power cable messed something up. After taking out the battery it booted up just fine. Just a little glitch. BUT still something that i have now found can happen.

I keep mine plugged in almost all the time because it usually just sits on a table and I don’t carry it with me often. I always take the battery off if I am going to leave it plugged in for more than a couple of hours. If you leave it plugged in constantly with the battery on it, you will shorten the lifespan of your battery. Most modern laptops have lithium ion batteries, which will die after a certain number of charge cycles.

Basicly if you can, you should always plug in your computer, in order to save your battery lifetime.
