Family help: Hello everyone, I have recently ran into a little problem and would absolutely love to receive some advice on the situation. - Help.com

Hello everyone, I have recently ran into a little problem and would absolutely love to receive some advice on the situation.

I decided to take the summer semester off from college to try to find a new job. I have been at my current job for 4 years and they absolutely treat me and everyone else there like dirt. So I go on some job websites posting my resume and sure enough within a week I get called in for an interview. I’m on top of the world! Did I really just land a new job that quick? So I go in for three interviews and I’m hired. So I put in my 2 weeks notice, which was an amazing experience. Only one huge problem, my excitement has completely blinded me to what this job is really about. The job is commission only and I have too many bills to rely on commission. I was going to try the job out to see if I could make good money doing it, but the more time I spend with this company the shadier they seem to be. Today I was supposed to train by giving a presentation to some family members with my field trainer. The guy said he was going to call me at 2pm, so at about 1:30pm another trainer that I have never spoken to calls me, acts like she’s doing me the biggest favor ever, and then proceeds to tell me I will have to drive approximately 40 miles to pick her up. WTF?!! That would mean 40 miles to pick her up, 40 miles back to see my family, 40 miles to drop her back off, then last but not least 40 miles back to my house. 160 miles for this training session that I’m not being paid for, I don’t think so! With gas as high as it is I would need a loan for this trip alone. After hearing this idiot tell me this I told her I would call her back. After settling down I called her back and declined her services. So anyway I think I have had enough of their crap and I’m going to call tomorrow to tell them so.

Now for the questions. Should I try to take back my 2 weeks notice? Has anyone ever done this, yourself or anyone you know? If so, How did it go? Would it be better to get a small financial loan to pay my bills while looking for another job? I really feel like this place will treat me like crap if I take my 2 weeks notice back. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

I’ve never had to take back a two week notice so I dont know on that one. Depending on whether they have already rehired or terminated your job position, they will probably take you back because it would be easier than hiring someone new to train, as long as when you quit, everything went amicably. I would go ahead and try to stay at the same job, just talk to whoever you need the first day this week they open for business. Good luck!

Well, I’m not sure that taking a loan is a good idea in this economy if you can help it. The job you had is not ideal and it may be hard to bite the bullet and face them again - much depends on how you resigned really. If you left in anger or told them how you felt about the place, it may be tough. But if you just handed in notice and told them you were moving on to a new job, then you still have a chance to get your job back. All you need to tell them is that your new job fell through. They don’t need details. Anon is right.. they know you and you are a safer bet than a “newbie”.

If you do get your old job back, they will already be aware that you wish to move on so don’t be afraid to keep searching for your ideal job.

You could go back to your old employer and see what they can do for you. In the meantime, try finding another job. You may find the right job while in middle of this “pickle” that you got in by accident.

I think try to get your old job back. You were treated bad to start with, if they take you back, at least you will be earning some money whilst they still might treat you badly. Then you can look for a better job.
Trying to get a loan only puts more strain on you, not a good idea.

I think it wouldn’t hurt to just retract your two week notice. Just tell them you changed your mind and if they would consider rehiring you. It doesn’t hurt to just try. If you leave without asking, you will only have doubts in your mind. You have bills to pay so you got to do what you got to do. I don’t think it would be a good idea to start taking loans to pay your bills. You can always go back to your job and continue your search. Try monster.com

I agree, a loan although would fulfill the here and know. Would only cause more strife later on when it comes due. I wish you luck and don’t be afraid to ask your former employer. You will not know until you ask. Keep your chin up.

Thanks guys!! I got my old job back, even though it absolutely sucks. On the bright side I am lucky to have a job at all. Thanks again.

Glad it worked out for you. Something better will come along, until then, at least you have money coming in! :)
