One of our first experiences in Alsace was drinking from an unending stream of Gewurztraminer (no complaints).
They were all infused with either rose or lychee perfume and spicy on the finish. Moreover, the wine was easily paired with some of our favorite foods. Back home, we wondered how California Gewurztraminer would differ. After doing some research, we came up with a very short list of local producers that received average to good reviews (did not find anything stellar) from critics as well as consumers. After smelling and tasting all the wines, we found a dramatic difference between Alsace and California. The latter lacked some of the structure and complex flavors found in the Alsatian wines. The rose and lychee were not always as prominent and the juice was not always as rich. That being said, I think everyone would agree that locally produced 1998 Joseph Phelps, brought to us by Dave “mystery bottle” Jones, was quite nice and very drinkable. At the end of the evening, the Alsatian wines just offered a richer experience.
1996 Rolly Gassmann Stegreben de Rorschwihr, Alsace 1999 Martinelli Vineyard, Russian River Valley 2001 Chateau ****. Jean, Sonoma, North Coast 2001 Domaine Weinbach, Colette Faller et ses Filles, Cuvee Laurence, Kaysersberg, Alsace 1998 Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Anderson Valley
Wines were yummy with… Terrine of Goose Foie Gras & mango Goat Gouda French Montrachet (goat milk) Italian Gorgonzola Montagna Blue (cow milk) Brillat Savarin (cow milk) Le Montagnard (cow milk) - a rustic Alsatian soft cheese
What are some of your favorite pairings with Gewurztraminer? OR anything it definitely does not go with… I’d love to hear about it!
