2001 Chevrolet Impala 3800 Problem: My car stops when running as if the key were switched off.

I can bring the car to a halt, put in Park and start up immediately - no hesitation or delay. There is no obvious connection to the problem. It stops when cold or hot - in motion or idling - sometimes it fails to fail (like the almost three days it was with the mechanic). There are NO error codes or Check Engine lights. The Ignition Control Module has been changed with no luck in solving the problem. A container of gas additive was added after the first time this happened, so it isn’t bad gas. It doesn’t appear to be the fuel pump of fuel filter since it starts back up right away. The car has aprox 122,000 miles on it and I’m the original owner and have not had a problem like this before. Any knowledgable assistance would be appreciated by both my technician and myself - especially me since I’m stuck without my car. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Where did you get your ignition control module? Take it back and swap it out for a new one, as that’s the primary suspect when you describe the problem…

The mechanic/tech got it new in the box from NAPA - same problem as before it was changed out.

If it’s not the ICM, it has to be a related system–perhaps the power is being cut off to the computer somehow?–because unless it’s something freaky I can’t think of anything else to explain it.

It may be that the only recourse is to take it someone with a lot of GM experience. Fortunately, sometimes it’s not too hard to find at an independent garage. If you can’t track someone down, you might be forced into taking it to the dealer.

I’ve been working w/ the best local independent garage in the area - knowledgable, honest, fair, etc. and the ICM was their best educated guess as well. Freaky is as good an explanation as any right now. If a fix happens, I’ll post the results. In the meanwhile keep those suggestions coming!
