I dunno… what do you want to use the computer for? I’m partial to Linux myself, and that fits what I want in a computer, but there are always some issues no matter what you choose.

Linux is much faster than older versions of Windows Server on the same hardware. I don’t know how OSX compares.

I know linux is going to be faster due to the fact there is less BS then running on windows, gamingwise ive looked into and the few games I play can be used on osx and linux through emulators. The problem is for my degree i like to use the software on my laptop rather then in labs, this would be CAD software and matlab as well as maple. Matlab I know has to be run in an emulator to work on other os that are windows.

Windows XP is much faster than Windows server. Many people claim good performance running emulated software on Linux, but I write it off as part of the general “linux evangelism” — maybe it’s true, you’d have to try it.

The problem I have is I like the looks of osx, vista based microsoft, and ubuntu. I jsut can’t go back to the crappy looks of xp (no offense). My mother who is a computer tech for the local comunity collage recomands server 2008, since it looks like vista but is alot faster

http://osnews.com/ - they sometimes have useful info

Websearching for speed comparisons on hardware similar to your own would probably be most fruitful unless your mom really knows what she’s talking about and giving you perfect advice :)

Cheers for the link. Didn’t know that site. I found some interesting articles there.
