I have a friend who thinks her little sister might have a brain tumor.

My friend, Ashley, has a little sister who has been going crazy for no reason and has been getting bad headaches very frequently, and they just started. Ashley told her mom and she just yelled at her. I’m also worried about Ashley’s little sister. Does anyone have any ideas?

~Thank You~

It’s impossible to diagnose someone online hun. The best thing to do here is to not panic and to reassure your friend.

There could be lots of causes for these symptoms … a reaction to medication, a trigger in the diet, an infection or virus. It’s not clear how long this has been going on. Does she have a fever? If she suddenly develops a fever or rash and the headaches only started a day or so back… get Ashley to get her medical help quickly.

It’s difficult for you to do anything much here as you are not a family member. Do you have a parent you could talk to about your worries? Maybe they could chat to your friend’s mom and see if she needs some help with this.

Ashley’s mom could be under stress and maybe that is why she didn’t react well to her efforts to help. Encourage Ashley to talk to a school counsellor, a church leader or another family adult who may be able to help.

If Ashely feels no-one is taking her seriously, maybe she could visit the doctor and talk this through with a medical advisor.

Keep a close watch on little sister. If things get worse, don’t be afraid to call for medical help.

Tell Ashley that she could mention her little sister seems out of sorts to her kindergarten/school teacher/childcarer but that mom doesn’t seem to be handling it well.

That’s about all you can do hun, but I’m sure things will work out just fine.

Thank you soooo much. It’s just that when Ashley told her mom, her mom said Don’t you say that f*** again.

Maybe her mom is scared. People panic and are not logical when they are scared.

Or maybe she misunderstood and though Ashley was saying something mean like “she has a brain problem… doh”.. when she wasn’t.

I have one more idea for you. Make sure little sister is drinking enough water. Dehydration can cause headaches and confusion.

Good luck with this hun. Remember that stress can cause a lot of physical problems too.. and headaches and outbursts are one of the most common things it does to people. Even little people. So try not to worry, be vigilant and supportive. Things will be fine. I have to sign off now, but you take care. Ashley is lucky to have such a caring friend.

Thank you sooo much. You’re probably right about the stress because her parents recently divorced.
