Not a whole lot, and that’s the point of an ectoparasite. Occasionally they are accidentally ingested by the host while scratching. That is the most common reason for tapeworms in cats and dogs (from ingested fleas)

The three most important natural predators of fleas are ants, spiders, and ground beetles. Also lizards eats fleas, not on your dog or cat but they can eat the ones in your carpet.
