Find help: so… why do the US call football ’soccer’, and - Help.com

so…

why do the US call football ’soccer’, and call football, which is basically rugby with pads and you don’t use your feet at all, football.
is there a reason? i mean you could have just invented an entirely new word for your american football, like american jockball or something? its an entirely new sport, use a new name?!
this question has bugged me for along time, its time i find answers! lol =]

Hello? What does the “kicker” do praytell?

Nonetheless, our sport of football actually was called pigball WAY back in the day. Who wants to play “pigball”? Sounds nasty… so, we changed the name to football, oddly, just to confuse people into watching the sport until it caught on… LOL…

They do call ‘Jam’ ‘jelly’… they can’t be trusted!!

It’s probably just one of those “lets confuse everyone” kind of situations…

its the euros, and its only the group stages. no winners yet!
seems like it may be germany or holland by their form on the first matches, but that can change!!!!!!!
anyways, you actually kick the ball in that game?! they never show that on films =?
so what, you kick it like a rugby ball? in the middle of the posts?
i prefere the first name ;P
i thought that whole confusion, trend thing was to blame, couldn’t think of a another reason honestly. fair enough, thanks.
so why do you have a world series in baseball (i think it is baseball) but no one else joins?

I wish I could help you Ayc, but if it was up to me, I would have called it Holdball, thats most of what they do. Jockball is funny too! But I do wonder who was it that concidered Football to be football in the first place. I love soccer. I like that name too. Its catchy.

probably the same reason we don’t use the metric system. we use the standard (how standard can it be when one country uses it?) to irritate the rest of the world.

joking aside, football is very different from rugby. the padding makes the hits more violent, and the forward pass revolutionized the sport. i don’t think american football will catch on internationally, there are too many nuances and rules to understand. if you grew up with it, you would probably like it. i never watched a socc-sorry, “football” game in my life, have no comprehension of any rules, and hated my one attempt to watch the sport on tv. seeing as how millions of people worldwide love the sport, i’ll plead ignorant.

Okay here is the lowdown.

Football (English) is the grandfather of both rugby and American football. Rugby evolved from football, and American football evolved from rugby. As for the name game, I don’t know why we didn’t call it American rugby, or something else entirely. Maybe because all the rules weren’t changed at once, but over a timeline. Therefore with every new or revised rule, someone wouldn’t have to come up with a new new name.

Association Football is the term the English used to distinguish English football from Rugby Football. Assoc Football was a pet name once, as was simply Assoc. Then it evolved to Soccer. See the correlation?

So when you blame us for screwing up football names, it was all those immigrants from the UK and Ireland that did it. So nee-ner nee-ner. (As a side note, my family were many that immigrated.)

Haha, that being said, I don’t hold interest in sport. It is funny that I understand most of the big sport rules and history (aside from Rugby). It’s weird where you pick up this stuff.

rugby became ‘rugger’ and ‘association football’ was called (a)soccer.
it was a private school nickname for the two sports.
in australia they call rugby union, rugby league and australian football, and sometimes football, ‘football’. they call them different codes. god knows why- itsunion, league, AFL and football.
