haven’t been here for a while but wanted to share a recent experience…
On May 31st at 12;05 AM as I was holding my brother’s hand he died peacefully after a long battle with stomach cancer which spread like wildfire over the past few weeks.
I am not here to seek sympathy…his death was a relief for his suffering was pure agony to him and to his family. We watched a strong healthy 60 year old man be torn apart in 16 short months and yet his spirit never died. He remained a fighter until the very end.
but the amazing part of this story is his children ages 14 and 17 - they have not turned their backs on their faith, their families, they have not foresaken their grades, their friends, or their health. Instead they are doing their father proud, their grades are spectacular, his son gave the eulogy and stood strong to honor his father.
In a society of so many who prefer to wallow in grief and dispair for whatever ails them…I am truly proud of these two teenagers. I spoke with both of them recently and they are starting to raise funds to erect a memorial plaque in their dad’s name as a coach and scout leader in their community. My brother was one to lead by example and his example and legacy live on in his children.
I couldn’t be more proud of them.
I dearly miss my brother. Life will never be the same for any one of us. My three year old will never remember Uncle Gene. But I know that his love and those memories will carry us through the darker days and fill our hearts with laughter when we look back on all the wonderful memories we shared.
Thanks for the time in reading this tribute to my brother and his children.
I hope you are all well.
