Could anyone give me a brief history of the Vietnam War?

When did the US officially join? They appear to have had some involvement for a few years prior to having any combat troops land on Vietnam shores, however my sources are a little contradictory.

I’m supposed to be writing a history essay now about why the US withdrew it’s forces in 1973, however I find it awfully difficult to do so when I don’t really understand anything about the war itself.
Any help would be lovely ^^

ummmm hang on i should know this :P I have test on it tomorrow!

Ok, so the French were in Vietnam first, right up until 1954 and Dien Bien Phu. They were fighting the Vietminh. Then they got upset and left. The communists were in the North, the US supported a corrupt, anti-human rights, sadistic government in the South. I don’t think they ever officially declared war though. They got really invovled after the Tonkin incident, when basically they made up a Vietcong attack on a US boat. Casuaulties, death, and Napalm followed.

The US withdrew because (a) protests at home, (b) economic problems, (d) they didn’t have the “hearts and minds” of the people, (e) they were faced with guerilla fighters who weren’t willing to give up and who knew the territory a lot better than they did (f) they thought they were losing because of the Tet offensive, they weren’t but because they were morally discouraged, they withdrew.

I don’t know if that helped at all. :) Good luck
