How many moderators (mods) does a community need?
- 1 mod for every 1000 users
- 1 mod for every 100 users
- 1 mod for every 10 users
- everyone should be a mod / moderator

I’d say 1 mod for every 50 users, but that’s not an option on your poll.
Yea — you can’t always get what you want…

I voted for 1 every 1000.
And by that count we are very short here… Give me a min and I will tell you how many users we have currently. Some mods (my self included) have access to the server health and user tracking pages. Let me go grab some statistics for you.

Now if only my kids and other users on this site would accept that, lol
One really good one with some top software who works for 8 hours and gets paid and then is replaced by another really good one…..
Yes we need 3 in total for the whole world - Mas
Total user base as of this reply:
Total 199,002
Verified users: 52,478 (26%)
New accounts made yesterday: (2008-06-10) Total:410 Verified:25% 102 Unverified:75% 308
So going by your “worst case” 1000 users per mod… We only need 192 more mods!
I voted 1 for every 10, but like that will happen, we can’t even get 1 mod for the whole site let alone depending on users…
Those stats should not be on the screen - there is already someone from another organisation sniffing around here looking for all that well Happy Birthday CB
Seriously I’d remove them - my bosses would not be pleased if I had just thrown that out there - not at this ’sensitive’ time
it depends on the site.
A well developed site that discourages bad behaviour will need less moderators.
The important figure is the number of users that log on over a given time not the registered users.
Some mods on this site gets 40 to 50 reports to look at when they log on…..My mum who was a moderator of other sites had 150 to 200.
If you give the mods good training then you will find that the number of mod will drop in relation to the number of users.
As I said mum was a moderator on a number of site and so was my step father, and mums best friend that lives with us.
The style, complexity and the amount of training and support the mods get will be all factors in this ratio.
Setting any figure would in my opinion be inapropiate untill all these factors are considerd.
It depends on the site. Generally, there should be a moderator or admin available 24/7. If they are volunteers, you’ll need more of them.
There should be a mod’s only area so they can discuss issues among themselves, and they should have some say over the way the site is managed, and the way policies are carried out.
If you choose your mods from the general membership, try to make sure you choose people who are popular and well-respected. Throwing the “moderator cookie” to a member you feel sorry for or happen to be attached to won’t work.
And finally, “firing” a volunteer mod is NEVER a popular decision, so think carefully before adding one to the team in the first place. :)

depends on the site and its developments. Many sites do have a few mods that login and deal with all issues for the last 24 hours or so.
But this is not one that I recommend taking on that stile of moderation.

In short, being a mod is nothing more than a power trip.
