I recently moved to California from Ohio.

I brought a few grand and I cannot find a job for the life of me. I have filled out more than 200 applications (not even kidding) I just turned 21 and my money is starting to wear thin!!! I have never in my life had this much trouble finding a job, I’ve applied to all the fast food joints with no success. Looked in the classifieds with no success, if I don’t find something soon I’m just going to scrape rent for the next couple months, and I’m not going to be able to go to school ADVISE PLEASE!!

Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club are good bets.

Ive hit them both up several times, In Ohio I was a drafter for 2 years then my company died, I have a good record and I’m an extremely hard worker, I’m really at a loss why this is so hard.

Hmm. Well, the economy is at a standstill at the moment, (praise Lord Bush the Second for that one), and there’s not a bunch of options because of it. All I can suggest is to keep trying. And good luck.

You might want to check in where you will be attending school to see if there is a work/study program.

200 apps is extreme. Is there anything negative that you are disclosing on your apps?
The job market here in California is bad but not that bad.

no, I am completely clean, the only thing that I can personally think that is negatively affecting me is the fact that I haven’t lived here that long.

and I agree, it is pretty extreme, Ive never had this problem, I actually enjoy having to go to work >. .

Wow you are actually trying to get any type of job right now and having no luck?

Have you had any interviews?

If you have maybe you just need some coaching on exactly what they want to hear from you in a interview.

Keep calling places back, put down a completely open schedule, and be likable, but not overbearing when you talk to the interviewers. If possible, ask why they didn’t chose you and use that knowledge to make the next one more likely.

Go to the local command labor and get some temp work. Sign up in the morning and you will have a job by afternoon. Hope this helps :-)

Try temp agencies, your school, and employment agency. The school usually has either jobs on campus, or a job referral office like an employment agency. I hate to say this, but if you are having that much bad luck, there is something about you. You have to realize that in California, it is different than Ohio. They probably have hundreds of people applying all the time here, where maybe in Ohio it was slimmer pickings. They may have accepted more there than they do here.

Also keep in mind that timing is a big part of it. When you put in an application, ask for the manager. Don’t just turn it in. When you meet with the manager, shake hands and introduce yourself. Say you are looking for a job, and would be willing to do whatever he/she has available. Give them your application and say you are willing to start right away if there is an opening available. I am willing to risk my reputation that if you do this consistently, you will have a job in a week.

Use proper grammar in your applications, answer all questions, and make them pertinent to the job. If you are applying for a janitorial position, it doesn’t matter that you can draw. Tell them how good you sling a mop on the application where it asks for job duties and skills. You need to be truthful, but be specific to the type of job you want. For french fryer, don’t highlight your duties as a driver. Tell them your duties included operating a vehicle with proper timing and accuracy in company deliveries, liason with other employees and transport, and ability to operate equipment as assigned. It sounds better than drove delivery truck, and shows more ability that may apply to working with others making fries.

Be confident, neat, and dress for the job. No jeans, no tee shirts. Show up neat and clean, wear nice pants (maybe uniform pants like Dickies you can get at Walmart) and a neat shirt, maybe polo or button up casual. No hat, hair neat, and SMILE. Look the manager in the eyes, and show confidence. If you walk in at the right time, all of this should get you a job real fast.

Print neatly, too. If they have to re-read it, you don’t have a chance.
