Is this Racist?
??
Ok, I will not mention any names or places but this is how it went down. I have my highschool diploma and a semester done in college. I needed a job and got an interview with a movie theater. Ive been to these before but usually its one on one, instead they had maybe 10 people in there and the interviewer was late.
We get in and he asks us a series of question.
1. Whats your favourite movie?
2. What would you do if you could change anything with us?
3. What are the most important aspects of a leader?
4. WHATS YOUR FAVOURITE ANIMAL?…
So, I answered these the best I could, and he said he would call people sometime that night, I never got the call.
A few weeks later my friend, who is hispanic (Im white and live in florida) went in, note this, he has yet to even make to the 12th grade so his education is up there with mine. Anyways, the guy ask the same exact questions, and he got the job.
Now, I look back and I notice there was racism for that job. I should have been the one with a job, due to my higher education. Also, the guy did ask us about our education, and yet I didnt get the job. A question such as whats your favourite animal, had made me see that he had picked the people out already and was trying to make us feel as though we were are part of the interview.
He based it all on race because race is a big thing in south florida. So am I right or wrong?

hmmm, usually isnt the racisms towards minorities?!
very important: what race was the interviewer/manager?
however it might be because there are too many whites working, idk.
As white people, we are minorities in florida. The race of manager was spanish.
yea haha, i lived in miami years ago (hispanic by the way) and that is very true.
spanish people, and all others really, have a tendency to ‘help’ each other. so it was racist, but i think it was that subtle, internal racism that we all have inside, not really hate.
Let’s face it, you don’t exactly need an MBA to work in a movie theater. I doubt that education had anything to do with it. Maybe the other person was just friendlier.
From the interview, everyone was basically apathetic, and believe me you would hire someone with an education over someone with out, correct?
Oh I know, I have a better paying job now, but Im just putting this out because Im not the only person it effected and its kinda sad.
Actually, in unskilled jobs with high turnover, hiring is based mostly on things like schedule flexibility and personality, as in: how well the interviewer likes you. Maybe you just struck the guy as someone that he wouldn’t want to work with. Education isn’t really an issue; a college graduate can sling popcorn just as well as a 16-year-old kid. Besides, you weren’t there for your friend’s interview; he might have been more enthusiastic than you were or just have been having a better day.
I hate when people are all, ‘waah! racism!” just because there happened to be people of different races in a situation.
Well you just experienced what minorities go through almost everyday in the real world. Minorities have to fight extra hard just to get the positions “white people” get. You have to dumb yourself down to get a low income job. Which one would you prefer?
I hate when people are all, ‘waah! racism doesnt exist’ just because someone felt discriminated against.
Well, sorry to tell you but if someone is racist against a white person they totally get away with it. In fact, I have never heard of someone getting in trouble for being racist against a white person. Here in Canada many work places are “equal opportunity employers” which means if you are a white male without a disability you can basically give up on having a job there. Yes, and they have you fill out an ‘optional’ form to check of which of the following you are and then list a bunch of races and then women and visible disability can also be checked off. Anyone with a check gets their resume looked at first. Pretty interesting?
Just because you have a higher education does not necessarily mean you were a better fit for the job. I think you should probably just admit that he was better for the job than you are. It is a bit self righteous to assume that you deserved the job just because you are a few years ahead in school. And in my opinion very naive to think that it has anything to do with racism. For some reason you believe you are better than your friend and that is why you believe you should have gotten hired over him. I would think harder before you go around accusing jobs of being racist just because they hire a hispanic (who was evidently more qualified) over you.

Once again, you cannot ell who is fit for a job from the questions above. They tell nothing of your work ethic or back ground. Education does alot deal with whether or not you get a job, and Im not saying Im better, Im saying Im more equip to deal with people and have the educational background to prove that I stick with everything.
If those questions do not tell anything then how do you know you are better fit for the job? Maybe you are not better equipped to deal with people. Maybe your friend was a better fit for the job. Why is it so hard for you to admit that?
i cant see a reason why this should be rassist. when it comes to working in a movie theater education isnt that important. probably that hispanic guy just gave better answers to the interview questions. so dont take it so hard. move on, you will sure find another job.
Well have you ever heard of Jena Six. If you havent you should read up on it because a young black man got punished for defending himself from a racist white guy. The white guy didnt get in trouble but the black guy did. Also read up on Native Americans and see how the government pushes them aside. Did you know that the suicide rate for Native Americans is 60 percent higher than the general population because they get ignored on their reservations. Racism still exist to this day and it pisses me off when people say it doesnt. Im sorry but i dont have any sympathy for you. If we have to just deal with it then i guess you do to. We fight for our right every day in some places and you just experienced it once in your life (this could be false). Spanish are racist to blacks and whites in miami so hes probably right. My family lives in miami and they all say that the spanish are racist and are everywhere now. I dont know maybe its time you all got a taste of your own medicine. Not that you are racist but it seems as though every race has and still is suffering due to “white people”
And just to clarify, Spanish is not a race, it is an ethnicity

I want you to think like this, between too people who all you know is there face and the question you answered above, who would you hire, a guy with an education or a guy with a lack of education.

to clear that up I meant hispanic.
BY the way, I am passed this and I have a better job. Im just throwing this out to show people how racism happens every to everyone. Im not looking for pity, its here to educate.

Hes talking about Cubans they have taken over miami in past few years
Education may have been on factor in the hiring process. There could be a dozen other factors that went into it other than race. Sometimes people with more education won’t get the job because the company hiring doesn’t figure they will stay in that job long enough, because something better will come up.
There is no way to know for sure whether it was race or not, but I’m sure there are probably other differences between you and the person that got the job besides just your race and education.

People stop ignoring the fact that it is racist. Clearly this man lived in miami and knows and i have visited recently. They are racist to other races! Whether he was ignorant, educated, not a college student because he was white they wouldnt have hired him!
Just to clarify, I wasn’t saying racism doesn’t exist, I was just saying that not every incident relates back to race issues.
iv applied to fast food joints left and right. i have a hs diploma, and some college, like a year..and i cant get hired by any of them. im over qualified i found out from my local mickey d’s….
The race issue is usually exaggerated when it comes to employment. It often matters in the relations between employees, so it could play a role indirectly, as a manager does not want trouble among the employees.
But a manager or owner does most often not give a crap about the employee being white, black, a woman or a trained animal as long as the employee generates money and will not cause trouble.
Some public offices have very regulated enrollment rules, and education will be outmost important. You would then be able to “claim your rights”.
But private employers are free to hire whoever they want, along much more liberate rules. It is illegal to discriminate, but isn’t that what happens all the time?
In Sweden the politicians thought women were underrepresentated in some professions, so they decided to hire women on a quota. That means that boys were discriminated.
So what about education? If I own a company, wouldn’t I have the right to hire whoever I want? I may want only red-haired employees, or whatever.
We are so used to education being the prime parameter, so we forget about other things.
I even think that people with a low education are discriminated because of that. You can even extend it to say that people are discriminated because they are too poor to get a proper education!
If I hire somebody for a store job, I would consider a PhD a disavantage. To start with, it would probably be easier to find a bright young fellow who sees that job as a challenge. It may also be easier to find somebody with enough muscles, who does not have a PhD.
Secondly, the guy with the PhD is likely to move on within a shorter time, not being content with the store job. It costs money to hire!
One guy I knew said that he preferred to hire black immigrants, because they were generally so happy to get a job, so they gave all efforts to do it well.
When I hire, I look for a combination of “enough” education, and personality (where the personality is much more important than the education). I do some basic systematic research, because also I can be cheated. But the main parameter is my “gut feeling”, telling me if the person will fit into the crew and if he/she will add something to the organisation.
Most companies are not welfare organizations. The manager has a financial responsibility to the owner or shareholders.
