THIS WAS NOMINATED FOR BEST JOKE OF THE YEAR

A Russian arrives in NY City as a new immigrant to the United States. He stops the first person he sees walking down the street and says, “Thank you Mr. American for letting me in this country, giving me housing, food stamps, free medical care and free education!”

The passerby says, “You are mistaken, I am Mexican!”

The man goes on and encounters another passerby. “Thank you for having such a beautiful country here in America!”
The person says, “I not American. I Vietnamese.”

The new arrival walks further and the next person he sees, he stops, shakes his hand and says, “Thank you for the wonderful America!”

That person puts up his hand and says, “I am from Middle East, I am not American!”.

He finally sees a nice lady and asks, “Are you an American?”

She says, “No, I am from Africa!”

Puzzled, he asks her, “Where are all the Americans?”

The African lady checks her watch and says…….. “Probably at work!”

Im not trying to start any controversy or anything but i found that joke to be kind of racist :(. Is it implying that all immigrants dont work and only americans do?

Well where i come from immigrants work just as hard as americans if not harder… and i have also seen americans not working… Sorry but i did not find this joke funny at all. I guess when you are the immigrant its hard to see the humor in this

well.. i use to live next to a russian family.. and they didnt work.. infact.. they were given everything… even cars.. and every few months.. one of them would wreck their car.. even once rolled their car.. and with in a few days.. they were given another one.. brand new… and you are right.. there are a lot of immigrants that work out there.. but the ones that i lived next too.. took the government for everything that they could take from them..

Oh i never knew anyone who used the government for their personal gain as they have done. So i can understand where you are coming from. I just personally do not think its funny and i think im more upset because this joke was nominated for the best joke of the year. It just shows how americans really view immigrants, which is sad… But i guess everyone is entitled to their opinion

and im sorry that you feel upset about this.. i dont think it was to do that to you or any immigrants.. and i understand that.. there are a lot of them who bust butt and there are many americans who sit on theres trying to collect… when they are more than able to work… and this joke should be worded with a bit of.. how there are americans who sit on their butt.. as well.. so you are right.. but with being an american who has worked her butt off trying to get a head in life.. it just is upsetting to see immigrants who refuse to work and yet have it better than most americans… so i agree with both sides..

hahaha made me laugh, although in Australia where I live I know 2 immigrants that pay 10 times more for an education then I did and after they are educated they aren’t even guaranteed to be working or even saying here.

…was just thinking that the term American will be misunderstood forever… you know, I mean first of all, are we talking about North or South America?… at least the Mexican is as much ‘american’ as any other person whose ancestors once immigrated to the continents. I mean in this sense all Americans clearly are immigrants. By the way: The joke exists in localized versions in many countries all over the world and is considered to be racist everywhere. It’s also the first time I heard that in the US anything is free…. hehe
