Headstones or Milestones?

“Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they’re yours. ” (R. Bach)

~ Headstones or Milestones? ~

What was the last success that you experienced? Come on think back … can you remember? Was it graduating with your advanced degree? Was it landing that primo job? Was it your wedding? What?! you don’t really know what you’d call your last success?

That’s kind of OK, because you are not really alone. 95% to 97% of people do not have written goals. Not having written goals is sure death on the path of success. You can count headstones instead of milestones. If you don’t have a goal, you don’t have a plan, and if you don’t have a plan, you don’t have any milestones. If you don’t have any milestones, then it’s no surprise that you cannot remember your last success! Because that is exactly what a milestone is… a success and measurement of where you are in your plan to achieve your goal. My last success was putting together my website. My next success is to learn more about Marketing, and obtain my advanced degree.

Do you have to obtain your milestones all by yourself in order to be successful? Hell NO! Get all the help you can. You are not in this world all by yourself. You have to give and receive help every day of your life. Opt for win win situations. If you do that, if everyone around you is winning, your milestones will fly by, and the only reason you wouldn’t remember your last success, is because there’d be too many of them!

I was reminded of an old saying the other day; “The only institution that resists change is the Cemetery”. How true is that?! So set your goal… make your plan… and turn your headstones into milestones.

Bright blessings ~ Richard

so true. thanks for reminding me that. these past few months were the hardest, because i had already achieved what i wanted in my life, took me six years to achieve it. i was happy initially, but later on w/o any clearcut goal/ dream/ ambition, i felt bored, lost and unmotivated.

jenna, this is simply a reminder, a simple yet profound reminder in our lives.

Thanks dcb for that reminder. Without a goal, or inspiring dream to move forward to a feeling of being resigned or boredom EASILY kicks in. If we have the feeling of just drifting we have to look to our goals, and plan.

Also, I’d like to add I found this software designed for organizing your thoughts… I think it’s great! You start of just kind of brainstorming… adding little thought clouds on the screen… connecting them with lines as they become related… then with a click of a button, you have a full fledged outline. It’s great for writers, but it works great for setting your goal, and developing a plan too!

Sorry for the confusion Jenna… no help needed on this on… just seeing if I could help anyone else.

I would like to point out that setting milestone need not be as big and ambitious as those that Richard has achieved so well, but can also for many be as simple as doing the daily shopping.

Depression for example can leave the mind in such a confused state that setting these milestones that we all do so well and don’t even think about can be such an achievement. It can become not a way of life, but a way of survival.

I’ve always been fascinated by programs like that. Therapsis has an interesting post on a simple visual thought presentation: http://help.com/post/172139-self-graph
