It sounds like your mother will end up with a public defender. The public defender will undoubtedly advise her to go for a plea bargain. The prosecutors normally want the accused to serve at least “some” jail time. It would be best for her to have her own lawyer, but private lawyers are very, very expensive. What she did, of course, was NOT in the best interests of her three children. I think you need to make preparations to take them on, lest they end up in foster care–and foster care is something that is best to be avoided. Oh, your mother needs to SHUT UP and NOT talk to any detectives or prosecutors–only to her own lawyer. Make sure the public defender spends enough time with her to get ALL the facts of the case, and to determine if your mother’s rights were violated in any way. By the way, your mother took a real chance by acting as a “mule.” If those bags had ruptured in her body, she would have died. Probably the best thing to happen was to get caught, because her drug boss could have ordered her killed–and you had best assume that she is still being watched. No easy solutions to this one. If she is a first-time offender, the judge may be somewhat more lenient. She needs good legal representation at this time, and if the public defender doesn’t want to give her the time she deserves, tell the court you want a new public defender.

She knew what she was doing. A couple of grams is not worth getting busted for it had to be more than that. Your going to have to deal with it and make changes to cope with what is going to happen now. You might have to get another job to keep up with the bills. Good luck. Hope this helps :-)
