how do you feel about being atheist?
its not exactly as fun as a religion, we don’t get together and extol the virtues of science and reason like our religious contemporaries get together to worship their own things.
Maybe thats why the world is getting so messed up in a religious sense. No-one is challenging them on their turf so to speak, and perhaps giving them different views to think about?
Religious people for example on the most part will include their children into their religion at a young age. Atheists will not indoctrinate, they say “its up to you” so we are PC about it all.
Maybe we should become a little more vocal in our views? Just to level the playing field somewhat? How do you feel about that?

I used to think that God would punish me if I became an atheist. Now that I am one, I don’t care.
A part of me wants to become an athiest but the other part cant give up the existence of God. But i feel myself leaning more towards the athiest side… Idk i guess im still confused because my mom makes me second guess myself and i start believing in God all over again i just cant give him/her up. But religion is out of the question i think it was man made and i cant live my life by what man made
I think your all the voice needed.
I think an atheist is someone who doesn’t believe in God. So aren’t most people atheists much of the time? Like, I could imagine believing in God, but what I’m doing right now is called typing and expressing a thought. I don’t think there needs to be a cult around everything that’s not believing in God.
Well…I think that being more vocal about being an atheist may make it more of an organized religion than…you know…
I’m personally not an atheist (I’m agnostic).
Just the existence of someone who doesn’t believe in what you believe ruffles up religious folks
So…Oh man! I’m not making any sense am I!
Sorry! DX
Atheism isn’t really an idea in the way that religion is though, it’s more of an actualization. Thus you can’t really compare it how you’ve done, TC

Im just afraid i guess. I only talk about this to my mom and we had a heated debate about this yesterday. Im home from college so im not afraid to tell my mom my views on religion. I see her getting upset whenever i question it and i let her know how she makes me feel whenever she look at me like im nothing. She doesnt notice it and says shes sorry. But anyway thats besides the point. I just want someone to explain to me how you give up the thought that there is a God. Because my “fear” is whats stopping me
Btw what the heck is Agnostic?? I never heard of this religion or whatever it is til i found out about this site, which was not ago at all. It seems as though everyone who doesnt believe in religions are either Athiest or Agnostic. Do Agnostic believe in God but not religion while Athiest dont believe neither?
maybe i should point out that atheism is supposed to be the adoption of reason, evidence and learning (science), thusly the rejection of deity worship, if it has no evidence. its to do with rational reason.
that can be compared in the sense i was asking originally.
Agnostic is when you believe that there is something else a higher plane of exsistance. But you don’t believe in a single higher being.
Yo if you don’t believe in god maybe you should look at other ways to look at it . I see nature and the universe as god and karma as how we are supposed to live. look at Hinduism and Buddhism It doesn’t matter what you believe in
definitions from dictionary.com
atheism:
1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.
2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.
agnosticism:
1. the doctrine or belief of an agnostic.
2. an intellectual doctrine or attitude affirming the uncertainty of all claims to ultimate knowledge.
theism:
1. the belief in one God as the creator and ruler of the universe, without rejection of revelation (distinguished from deism).
2. belief in the existence of a god or gods (opposed to atheism).
So basically they are all members of the family of -isms. And have some sibling rivalries.

You can give up ‘god’ if you want, most people who do tend to have more belief in humans as a whole and see life for all the little wonderful things. its no less gratifying to live without a god.
I’m not an atheist and I dont go and “worship” with all those other idiots. Its just a pissing contest for smug judgmental bastards.
so you are agnostic i take it nightowl? thats good for you. most poeple dont really care, like you i guess.
I like being who I am. Atheism is so broad you know? I see things in a different light, and it makes me more open minded. I like to ponder different aspects of life, and well, I can’t believe in certain religions because I see the flaws in them. I also see the good parts of all of them, and I rather evolve my train of thought than to be stuck in doctrine that is 1000s of years old.
Opeth wrote:
I think atheism is narrow-minded.
I used to think the same of religions. But Its only one view out of so many we can all hold, its kinda silly to think that just because of that someone is narrow minded, ya’know?
As to the question. As an atheist I feel like I have the strength and courage to accept that there are no cushy and easy answers, that I may well die and have nothing to show for it. I feel strong in that belief, I feel like im a strong person to have allowed myself to stare death in the face and say I’m not afraid that one day you’ll take me forever.
I feel like an intellecutally honest person, not superior, just that ive been honest with MYSELF. Just that I’ve looked at the differetn views of the world and picked the hardest one to accept simply because it was the only one I could accept. The acceptance that I do not believe, because nothing has proven of earned my belief. And I’m never going to let someone come in and call me a fool, call me weak, or call me stupid or damned for my belief. Because it took more strength then most people know, for an elementary school kid to cry himself to sleep and finally one day admit that day would be it for him… that there would be nothing else for him.
Can you not believe in anything. Why do someone have to be labeled? Why cant we just be? And how are Athiest narrowed minded? If anything they are open minded because they dont judge someone for being different or what some people would consider not normal. And i heard about existentialism which explains your question Opeth
Opeth wrote:
I think it’s narrow-minded totally rejecting everything that could be of a higher form to humans.
Well thats your opinion and all I’m going to really say to that is: I think its totally narrow minded you dont accept Santa Claus or the tooth fairy.
Opeth wrote:
It almost begs the question “What is the point of living if we’re just going to die anyway?”
It really does beg that question, thats why its so hard. THats why I can stand up feel strong and say, I MAKE MY OWN PURPOSE.
i think its narrow minded to beleive an old book (for example), or what you are told, without evidence, questioning that evidence, re-testing the evidence and generally always keep striving for the truth. which is what science does. which is what true atheists want.
atheists would admit they were wrong if we found god with reasonable scientific evidence. until then the evidence and logic suggests that its factually incorrect right now. but even then, would we worship them? probably not, we would want to know how they came to being. they will never be our god, we will always question and quest for the truth. that make sense? im trying to be as brief as possible, sorry.
oh and we all have purpose in life, its worth living! its so beautiful!. even when you look at it scientifically ;)
I guess no matter what religion/group you belong to there will always be hatred among people. There is no escaping it, which to me, in my opinion, disappointing and im ashamed to be apart of the human race because of it… Seriously :(
Opeth wrote:
I actually do believe in the tooth fairy and Santa Claus thank you.
Oh? I dont believe that for a second.
*sighs and stops himself*. I told myself no more arguments, no more strained discourse. It gets nowhere. I just was insulted by your 1 sided accusation that atheists are narrowminded and somehow theists arent. But im letting it go and leaving this post. Bye.
snar dont go, i request you stay and say what you want, even if we have gone off-topic. which ever makes you happiest, its up to you =]
Now we have Agnostic and Athiest going back and forth just like all the other religions. Which dont make sense to me because isnt that one of the reasons you all chose to be apart from all the other religions and now you are acting just like them. Wow… Im confused once again, darn
lol yeah your right, as you can see when you really get into it, you realise how opposing the views are. to the extent, if you really think about it, and get to grips with it, they are not co-existant. so yeah, atheism isnt as easy as people think.
i kinda hoped i would get atheist answers to my original post, but that has proved not to be so.
i have learnt a lot at least =]

All atheists all agnostics, all christians. We are all people, with our own flaws and our own tendencies. None of us can be lumped together and have the same reasons for belief or disbelief.

I answered your original post!
Hm, as far as the original question goes … I don’t know if atheists should be more vocal about atheism. I think you personally might benefit from joining forces with groups of atheists to discuss your beliefs (or lack thereof). I think it’d help straighten out some of your thoughts about it.
like.. things like this probably have some valuable ideas: http://community.beliefnet.com/forums…
do you have any ideas on how my views should be straightend?
i just gather that from your wording you yourself do. if you do, please do tell me =] i like to be enlightened and evolve. thanks =]
i do speak to other atheists. but never about atheism, just science stuff, most of which if very difficult to understand quickly.
ayc wrote:

yes! I found that forum for you. The first one I found looked better put together and more independent from all the religious stuff you’d find at beliefnet, but it was called “Raving Atheists” … I didn’t think the zealotry of “raving” was quite what you were looking for.
thanks, us atheists stay quiet and individual, when we do speak up, we get this kinda response. hence my original post.
you have any personal wisdom, or more internet links?
What didn’t you like about my response? I thought it might be helpful.
i did, i was aking if you knew/had more (?)
oh I see. Yes, here’s another interesting link:
