um, it IS a supremely huge thing. It affects the rates you get on credit cards, rates on home loans and car loans (and if you get them at all) It even affects the rate on your car insurance or if you can get that cell phone or not. Do you really think it doesn’t matter? or are you just trying to rile us up?

Basically, your credit score is a quick way to understand how willing or capable you are of repaying debt. It doesn’t matter at all if you never need to take a loan of any type, but if you do then you might want to care, as that’s the first thing the lender is going to look at.

The housing market is down as well as the leasing market, so credit score is not that important when buying houses

I beg to differ. A good credit score is no longer sufficient to get a mortgage, as you must also demonstrate the financial ability to repay the loan. (Banks are a lot more reluctant to hand out signature loans now than they have been in the past.) However, a bad credit score demonstrates that you aren’t responsible with your debts.

The housing market being down has nothing to do with getting a mortgage. THe mortgage companies being even more strict on who they select does. THey often require an even higher score now, more down and more assets. Your good credit score is MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. Yes, you could buy on a lease option, but eventually you will need to get your credit in order to qualify at the bank!
