sounds like an annoying grandma-in-law (is that what you’d call her?)

that is what gets me every time, that it isn’t nice not to respond. so i always stress out about how to phrase everything so that it will be the most polite and the least hurtful. DH doesn’t care so he won’t respond if i don’t. i feel sorry for her.

she actually hasn’t had our phone # for 6 months though… she was calling at all hours about stuff that she thought was an emergency…. it wasn’t. she’s also out of state and we never see her. so e-mail is it. if i don’t respond, there isn’t any accountability except my own guilt that, as you say, it isn’t very nice.

she has a few friends, her husband, and she is fairly close to DH’s brother.

she vacillates between treating me like total crap (yelling, screaming, crying, criticizing) and telling me she loves me like a daughter (when we have never spent a minute of time together other than one dinner and the wedding).

this e-mail from her is syrupy sweet and nice. it’s just the history of bad treatment. we don’t have a relationship, we never have, and i am tired of pretending we do.

Why do you respond, if that is the way you feel?

Everyone has times when they feel stressed and don’t want to talk to someone or everyone, maybe your just tired and a little wound up.
Try ignoreing the e-mail for now and go back to it another day, maybe tomorrow or the day after and then reply, just say that you are sorry for not getting around to it sooner.
You don’t have to reply to it the second it comes in so don’t worry about it.
And sometimes polite is the only thing you can do when there is no relationship there, you smile when you pass a stranger in the street don’t you? Or make polite conversation when waiting in line for something so just treat her the same.
