Should exporting toxic waste to third world countries be illegal?
I read this story and I don’t know what to think of it.

i would say YES!
why do we have toxic waste anyway?
we would be just fine without it… better off even.
I read that approximately 70% of the world’s toxic waste is from electronics
toxic waste should be illegal to send to poor countries.

I think it should legal in all honesty. I would rather have it on someone elses soil rather than mine. I mean, morally its wrong, but trust me you wouldnt want a 500 foot pile of toxic waste in your backyard.
I contradict myself yes, but Id rather it be in his backyard than mine. If there was an alternate solution that made everyone happy that would be awesome.
agreed.. but WHAT alternitive..
i want to keep my computer.. is there ANY other way???

recycling, its possible and we do have the technology to take the waste and reuse it in the manner it was first used. However, its not cost efficent.

Yes, it’s morally wrong, as you say – but you are in favor of doing it anyway?! That’s just great. Admirable.

Well if you believe its that wrong, why dont you call up the goverment and tell them they can dump it in your backyard?
Im only in favour of doing it because there is no other way that the goverment will recognize.
maybe it should be dumped on government owned land instead
Fort Lauderdale, FL, US | 1 year, 5 months ago (1 hour, 32 minutes after post)
Technically, the goverment owns all of the land, they could kick us off our property at anytime if need be. So basically we would dumping it on us.
perhaps we need to do what Europe is doing and fine manufacturers that use toxic chemicals in the first place. Until industry has an incentive to make products that don’t cause cancers during manufacturing and disposal products will continue to be poisonous.

Every company uses toxic chemicals basically. Its like beating a dead horse, you feel good but accomplish nothing.

I would say that many companies use toxics but at least some are attempting to do the right things like HP & Dell who have at least got a Design for Environment plan… even if only for PR reasons.
I agree with you though that most companies do what makes money fast enough to matter to shareholders and the markets quarter over quarter. Some are starting to try to capitalize on what is seen as a green trend but honestly I don’t think anyone will do anything significant until we face extinction as the human race.
I think we can already see the effects of overseas dumping with toxic imports coming back to bite us from the countries we dump in - I’m betting that the lead contaminated lipstick that came from China is somehow related to our current disposal practices there.

How can it be anything else but wrong?
Yes, I think we should deal with it here, in my backyard & yours, since we created it.
Fort Lauderdale, FL, US | 1 year, 5 months ago (1 hour, 50 minutes after post)
I didnt create it though, the goverment did. We have the resources to create product without the mass toxic waste but once again not cost efficent.
Im sorry but we do alot for other countries, this is only a temporary fix.
We are the government. We are the consumers. We are the creators.

They are the goverment. I am the consumer. He is the creator.

nope. But I would say its wrong because however many faults the U.S may have, it is not anywhere near as corrupt or lopsided in the power struggle between the poor and the rich. If we do export to foreign countries all thats going to happen is that we are going to line the pockets of a few wealthy individuals in the said countries who already probably have their children studying abroad in America or Europe. And wed be ******** on the local populace which didn’t have a say in the first place.

I completely agree with you Ghost - www.storyofstuff.com illustrates the process perfectly. Since we use the stuff I think it should be up to us to deal with it. People with NIMBY mindsets should be getting angry at the manufacturers who have made this an issue in the first place.
We can all vote with our wallets and choose to buy from companies that are at least trying to do the right things.

We do deal with it, just in another country. I dont think people are understanding the fact is if we bring it here we will be putting it in our backyard. Then we will have people complaining about all the waste we have here. Its a lose lose situation. At least, by putting it over there we dont have to look at it.
Out of site out of mind.
Morally wrong, maybe, but Id rather someone elses backyard be full of trash rather than mine. Trust me, the bottom line is people dont want toxic waste in their backyard.

Well then **** you. Might be morally wrong of me to say that but who gives a s**t, right? Lets just go with convenience.

Haha, a little hostel eh. But when it comes down to it you are never going to convinvce american people that its better for waste to be dumbed in their backyard rather than someone elses.

You never know until you try. Besides think of the people there man, they already have enough to deal with just with the crime, corruption, and hopelessness of their situation. Most of the countries still have “servants”. Why **** on people living in a shithole?

Ghost I think that people are generally lazy and greedy and don’t care nearly enough about each other as they ought to. Dumping on the poor happens for the same reason that they are exploited for the production of the same goods - they have no other choice.
Fort Lauderdale, FL, US | 1 year, 5 months ago (3 days, 22 hours after post)
I already know, so why try. Its the whole out of sight out of mind concept. If they dont see it in their backyard they dont care about what happens.
