Puppy trouble.
I’m getting extremely frustrated with toilet training my new pup. I’ve tried everything to get him to use newspaper but he just won’t. I’ve just everything sans rubbing his nose in it (I think that’s cruel) but I’m running out of ideas. I can’t teach him to go straight outseide just yet. He’s still only 9 weeks old, and he’s so tiny, I’d lose him in the grass, and there’s sharp prickles in there that could hurt him. Plus, he hasn’t had all of his shots just yet.
Can anyone help with some ideas that might work? Keep in mind I’ve tried almost everything I know and have been advised about so far. :(

Okay.
Let’s see what my parents did when we had puppies. Well, when they were young, we had a little sheltery thing for them. There was a crate attached to a cardboard box. Newspaper in the box, blankets in the crate. We’d clean out the newspaper, but not the blankets. No one wants to sleep in their poo, so they learned, and when they got out of the box and it’ll the whole house, the house became the crate, and the yard was the box.
Use Puppy Pads. You can get them at Petsmart (but they are more expensive) or even any Target, Wal Mart or any store in the pet supply area. Not sure what is in those things but both the pups my friends trainined learned to use them and eventually outside. Put them at the exit to outside so he leans to hold it til he gets there or goes outside. You can gradually take them away. To start put them in a few different areas of your place. The pads are easy to pick up and can hold alot. Better than newspaper - more absorbent.
Also keep in mind the younger they are the smaller their bladders are and less than can hold. So some accident will occur. This will lessen as the get bigger. They will get more control.
Take him outside every hour or 1/2 hr if necessary on the grass or wherever you would like to train him to do his thing:) If he goes have in your pocket small dog treats and give him one with lots of praise IMMEDIATELY. Say the “word” you would like to use to teach him to go on command (examples: dump, go pee, go poops…) After awhile he will get the idea to go on command then you can teach him where to go wherever you are (examples vacation, road trips…:)
Hmm, I’ve never heard of puppy pads. I’m not sure if they’re sold here though. I’m in Australia, but it couldn’t hurt to ask my local petstore. They had these sort of pharamone drops you can put on the paper and the pups instantly go there because of the smell, but the bottle was $20 and it was smaller than an eye-dropper.
And personal, I’ve tried to keep him out of some areas of the house, and limited the areas he can go (ie;, my room or the other bedrooms) but when he goes, you can’t even tell until you see it, he walks while he does it so you can’t even get him to the paper in time.
He’s Toy Chihuahua X Jack Russell, so he’s really tiny, and probably won’t get much bigger than he is. Does that mean his bladder will always be a little difficult to control? I’ve never had a small puppy before, mostly bigger breeds.
I had a few min pins and have one now I trained them all to go where I want them to go and also on command because I like to take them with me wherever I go. My min pin Missy can hold it for hours if she has too.
Don’t scold him when he’s done something bad, he won’t understand it’s all noise to him good or bad. But do make a big fuss when he does as expected this will make him want to please you. When he does wrong remove him from the area and clean it up when he can’t see you.
Sounds weird but I have heard success with little toy chi’s in Litter Boxes. Not only is it easier for you, but all your friends won’t be able to help goin AWWWWWW when they see a dog using the litter. Its pretty funnny
Hmm, now that could work. Although my cat might disagree a little to have to share her’s, so maybe I’ll buy him his own. LOL.
Thank you, Baseball, I just might try that. He and the cat adore each other, so maybe if he sees her, he’ll follow example.
You should be able to get the puppy pad at any pet store. I hadn’t heard of them til my friends used them.
The litter box is a really great idea especially since he is small and you already have a cat. Yes I would get his own.
Good Luck.
No change as of yet, simone. Thank you for asking. However I’m buying him his litter box this morning (it’s almost 5AM here) and we’ll see how that goes. :)
