Your Real Estate agent could contact the past owner and find out the code.

It would have helped if you could have said what make and model the garage door opener is. However, I can give you a couple of options for looking at it until you can either respond with a make and model or call your local garage door opener dealership who can walk you through how to reset the remote.

On many basic models of garage door openers, if you open the battery access door to the remote, you will see a row of nine or twelve tiny little switches. If you see this, then somewhere on the actual opener (the engine part on the roof of your garage) there will also be a panel or door that you can open up to access an identical row of switches. If your opener is like this, all you have to do is make sure that all the switches match: for each switch that is “up” on your opener, the corresponding switch in the remote should also be “up” and for each switch that is “down,” do the same on the remote.

If your opener does not have the little switches inside the remote and on the actual opener, then you may have a model with a reset button located somewhere on the overhead opener in the garage. It will be just a small round button, and it is usually near the little white or red light bulb that indicates when the remote is working. If this is what you have, then you’ll have to press in the reset button, usually for about three seconds or until the indicator light either turns on or starts blinking. Then, within a few seconds, you should press the button on your remote that would open your garage door. Once you press it, the indicator light on the actual opener will probably change. It may start blinking faster or go solid. You’ll need to press the button on your remote once or twice more until the indicator light turns off. Then, the next time you press your remote button (wait just a few seconds before trying it) it should open your door. Do not wait too long between pressing the button on the remote, or your will indicator light will turn off and you will have to start over. Just a couple of seconds between pressing it in will do.

I hope that this will help. If it doesn’t, I probably won’t be on much longer so I would recommend looking in your local yellow pages for a garage door sales company and giving them a call. They’ll probably be able to walk you through it over the phone. Just make sure that you can tell them the brand name and model listed on the garage door opener so that they can give you the right instructions.
