It would probably depend on the size and composition of the comet, what it’s orbiting, what other objects and gravitational forces it passes close to, etc.

Well, if the sheet doesn’t specify and it’s not in your textbook or your teacher didn’t tell you, just write some smart answer like “About 20 miles per hour” or something.
By the way, doing that might not be a good idea.

there is in 2039, just incase you were wondering…

and as for the speed of a comet, that is a ridiculous question, it could be anything! i dont personally have a clue, i’d guess at 40,000 miles per hour?

Comet speed depends on where it is in its orbit. A comet near the Sun will go much faster than that same one orbiting far away, as gravitational potential energy has been converted to kinetic energy. Something near the Sun will be moving anywhere from 30 to 100 km/s.

Have a look at http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffe… . It gives 51 km/s for a comet impacting Earth. That’s about 30 miles per second. Note that that is NOT “per hour.” Big difference.

You could use that number directly and specify where in the orbit it is, but for a physics paper you might want to use Kepler’s laws to figure out the minimum, maximum, and average speeds.
