What happens when you rip a dollar bill?

Is it illegal to ruin money? I know that if 2/3rds of the bill is still in tact, it is considered legal tender, but what does it mean when its ripped in half? Does the dollar lose value completely? Is it considered ‘defacing federal property’? Do people or the government own money? Or what about coins, why is it okay to break coins but not bills? Does anybody know?

Right, I understand that, it’s an easy fix, but think about it: if money is so replaceable, doesn’t that make it more symbolic of something than actually something materialistic? And if money is a concept and not an item, what does that say about the real value behind things? And doesn’t it cost money to replace money? There are just so many problems with being able to destroy money, and it doesn’t make sense.

I know that when I was young I was always told by my Dad that if you half a note and bring it in to the post-office, whoever brought in the first half gets the full money. If you bring in both halfs then they just replace it with a new one, I think. I’m pretty sure thats how it works in England.

I think defacing coins is technically illegal: they used to have machines that stretched pennys into cool shapes for you but I think they’re banned now.

This all only applies in the UK, though.

Money these days is worthless. Money is essentially a promise for someone else to change your note into something real, gold. However money is no longer linked to the value of something real so you can’t take your $1 and get a gold bard.

However, everyone has decided that having a $1 means something to them as they can exchange it with someone else who holds it to have value.

And money is not limited to worthless notes. In prison, where the economy is arguably smaller, money takes the form of cigarettes which have an attached value and can be traded for products and services.

I could make my own money and so long as everyone agreed that it was worth something in trade, people would use it. I hope that helps you - it is hard to explain! Sorry!

But I still don’t understand: what is the justified reason behind illegalizing the destruction of money? What would the argument be for keeping money the way it is and not destroying it?

The government (whichever government it happens to be) needs to know how much money is in circulation. If less money is used or if it is damaged, and everything costs the same amount that means people will struggle to pay for things and the ‘price of bread’ ie the price of the essentials in life will have to go down if people want to buy. But, because people won’t buy them, shop-keepers and producers will get poorer and demand more money for what they’re selling, resulting in a bad economy. Obviously this wouldn’t happen from destroying one dollar, but every little counts.

Yes, it is in fact illegal to rip United States currency. According to Section 5.3.9 of the United States Judicial Supreme Court Ruling Handbook, paragraph 9, sentence ‘c’, “No person, either living or dead, is given the right to rip money.”
Mimumum sentence is 4 years in prison and/or $250,000.00 or pnishable by death.
