Why do people tap their ciggarettes to their hand when they first buy them.
I’m smoker and when I buy a pack of cigs, I tap them to my hand but I don’t know why. I don’t even know if i’m tapping the right side. WHY do I do this!? Is there even a valid purpose?

i believe it is to bring the tobacco to the tip of the cig. i don’t smoke so i don’t know for sure but i think that why
I get it now cuz I do it the wrong way and when I smoke the ciggarette breaks cuz theres a little gap between the filer and the tabbaco.
I know some people who do it to pack the tobacco up a little tighter. Me, I don’t do it, but I turn one up-side down when I first open it and save it for last. It’s a lucky cigarette and I make a wish on it when I light it.
packing them compacts the ci. makes them a little stronger. i’m guessing you arte young and started smoking recently? i can’t lecture you, i’m a smoker, i started sooooo young. it’s such a nasty habit tho.a few years and it takes its toll on you. i live in ny and they put state taxes on cigs-they just went up to $7a pack! almost $9in NYC!!!!!!!!I’M STILL SMOKING……
I know, jezzy. The prices have gone up here in Australia too. Though, ours come in packs of 50 cigarettes too, and they cost around $20 now, sometimes $25 depending on the day and brand. It’s ridiculous. That’s why I mostly smoke roll-your-own tobacco.
And yes, it certainly does cause issues after a while. I’ve been smoking since I was 14, and I’m 22 now. I can barely run anymore, or walk because I get out of breath. I got a flu back in March, that turned into bronchitis, and it still hasn’t gone away. I’d quit, but my will power at the moment, isn’t strong enough.
They’ve addictive little buggers, and so much more dangerous than we realize when we inhale it into our lungs. They also, can screw up your nervous system. So if you suffer from anxiety, or stress, cigarettes actually don’t calm it, it makes it worse… I wish I had known that back then.
TO SKYE- i know… now they advertise soo much about the damage smoking does. they didn’t do that as much when i was younger. i’m 29-started at 14also. they are really a b*tch! i panic when it comes time to quit. i woke up one morning-and my bf accidently took all th ci’s to work. i was stuck here with no car-I CRIED! i really did(Who does that!) i want to quit but i talk myself out of it. i used to be sooo athletic, now i lose my breath so easily. ugh-they are sooo bad!
but…i’m drinking coffee so i have to go outseide to have one!
$20bucks!!!*that’s insane! that’s worse then here. although our packs have 20 in them. i never heard of packs of 50! i guess they last a lot longer. if you can make it last all week-20bucks isn’t so bad. it’s easy to smoke a pck of 20in one or two days-so that adds up!
I ran a test. I took two identical cigarettes. I packed one for quite a while (got it to settle between 2 and 3 millimeters below the lip) and left the other alone. I put them on a platform with a book on top and lit them. In the first run, the packed one smoldered for 11 min before getting to the filter. The unpacked took 12 minutes. I had to re-light each twice. In the second run, the packed took 10 min 30 sec and the unpack lasted 10 min 50 sec. So, based on this crude study, the packed ones burn slightly (around 6%) FASTER than the unpacked. This makes sense since the tobacco is more compressed and the heat of the cherry is allowed to “pre-burn” more tobacco. I’d also imagine that the cigarette would taste stronger, not smoother in a packed cigarette since it is denser. My guess is that people tap the packs as a holdover from when cigarettes were hand rolled and more loosely packed which could lead to tobacco falling out. Mainly, people just do it because they think it makes them look cool and sophisticated.
