BINGO! And Jesus wins Half a Crown! So now comes the hard part. Half a Crown was equal to 2 1\2 shillings, which equalled 30 pence. Fortunately, the Brits mercifully did away with shillings, crowns, and the like in 1971, when they were forced money countable by visitors without degrees in medieval economics. As a reward, therefore, I have spent the last 30 minutes attempting to assign a real world value to a wager found in a Charles Dickens novel.

So…

Half Crown = 2.5 shillings = 30 pence. Unfortunately, past values are assessed by something’s relative worth and the relative worth of an object is rarely it’s own value. There are thus several ways to one could update 30 pence in today’s market. According to the calculations of “Measuring Worth’s” Retail Price Index, 30p in 1970 would have been worth £1.34 in 2006 money. Now in 2006, £1.34 (GBP) was worth about $2.47 (USD). So, adjusted for 2007 inflation, I owe you roughly $2.54 or £1.28.
