computer help: The right speaker on my laptop is making an annoying clicking noise, and it seems to get faster. - Help.com

The right speaker on my laptop is making an annoying clicking noise, and it seems to get faster.

In addition, it seems my palmrest is getting extremely warm.

I plugged in headphones and the same noise came from the right headphone.

I pulled the headphone jack out and it was nuclear hot.

I just started having the same problem a few days ago. my mother used my computer speakers to blast music outside for the labor day barbeque (it was a ridiculous idea, i know) so i think that’s how the problem got started. i’d say the sound is something like a distant woodpecker drilling into a tree, only a bit duller, but still annoying as all hell. The only thing that seems to make the sound stop is jiggling the right speaker’s connector that goes into the left speaker. Other than that, both speakers work normally and don’t give me any problems such as the intense heat you experienced. Another thing i noticed was that the tapping/clicking sound didn’t get louder or quieter when i rotated the volume dial on the control speaker, so it was equally audible at 0% as it was at 100%. On second thought, this broadband router might be causing some sort of electromagnetic interference too, but I’m not entirely sure. It’s a LinkSys model WRT54G model by the way.

I’ve got the same problem with my Toshiba laptop, but I don’t get any heat from it, and having headphones plugged in doesn’t change anything. Any ideas?
