Basic Guide to Book Reports

Book reports or book reviews are common writing assignments of students. Writing book reports is a painstaking task as it demands critical evaluation of the book. A book report is not a mere summary. It is indeed subjective but it entails criteria or literary merits to be considered before drawing a personal assessment – a personal evaluation based on facts and scrupulous detail scrutiny.

There are several components and reminders in writing book reports. In order to produce a high-end book critique, one has to consider the following:

It must provide an overview of the book. An overview is usually located at the first paragraph of the review. Book Reports must present the author’s purpose and the theme of the book to give the reader an idea on how well the book fulfilled its purpose or conveyed its theme. Here are some guide questions in creating an overview for book reports: What was the book intended to do? Did it? What is a central theme? How did the author convey it? Were characters used to convey it? Is it effective?

It must have an assessment of the book’s strengths and weaknesses. This element of book reports give attention to the narrative voice. It must answer the questions: Who is the narrator? Is the narrator appropriate and effective? Are the characters believable? Is the language and wording used appropriate to the book’s genre? Does it support the purpose of the book?

It must contain information about the author. Biographical information of the author may be of interest in writing book reports. Here are some things to tackle: What are the author’s previous works? How does the author’s life experience feed the writing of the book?

Add a personal perspective. After an objective evaluation of the literary merits and demerits of the book, it is also essential to inject a personal perspective. Writing book reports is really subjective in nature, however objective criteria are employed to come up with a personal assessment. In adding a personal touch to the review, consider the audience and go easy with the jargon. It’s like creating a personal essay that illuminates responses to the work being reviewed.

Leave out the unnecessary elements. Book reports usually do not include footnotes, bibliographies, long quotations from the book or other reviews, and information about the author that is not related to the theme of the review.

Remember the basics. Aside from the major components stated above, there is really no right way to write a book review. Book reports are highly personal that serve as an avenue to reflect opinions of the reviewer. Also, a review can be of any length – it can be as short as 50-100 words, or as long as 1500 words, depending on the purpose of the review. And lastly, keep the audience in mind. This defines the emphasis on various parts of the review.

Writing book reports requires a sophisticated understanding of what type of review is needed for the assignment and the basic elements with it. These make creating book reports a lot more fun to write and to read.
