Course Selection Help.

Next year I had planned to take AP Physics B, AP Biology, AP English Literature, AP Government & Politics, AP Spanish Language, and a required religion course. This means 6 classes in all, as opposed to the usual 7 classes that a lot of seniors take, meaning I would get off school an hour earlier. Even if I would be taking six classes, five of them would be AP or advanced placement classes - college level coursework in a highschool environment.

Now, in order to take AP Physics B, based on my mathematics history I would need to concurrently take a PreCalculus or AP Calculus AB math class, or at least take a math higher than Algebra 2 in summer. Instead of opting for that seventh class in my schedule for various reasons, I decided to take a PreCalculus class at my local community college. Unfortunately, this morning even though I performed decently on the mathematics placement test (42 out of 50), I was told that I could not take PreCalculus there. So now I’m stuck.

This leaves me a few choices:

1)Contact the counselor and see if I can still take AP Physics B without the math prerequisite. This would mean that in my high school career, I will only have completed three years of mathematics, not the ‘recommended’ four years. Colleges might not like this aspect of my resume despite the five AP classes. Maximum GPA: 4.83

2)Drop AP Biology, which is a ton of work anyway, and replace it with PreCalculus. Of course, there is a 50/50 chance that I will get the hard-aarse teacher that mostly everyone had received a ‘C’ in his class last year, including someone who I consider far better in math than me. However, there is also a chance that I will get the extremely easy teacher that everyone aces. Maximum GPA: 4.66

3)Drop AP Physics B, which is ridiculously hard anyway (only handful got higher than a B), and replace it with PreCalculus or two easy semester long classes, such as painting and drawing (but for the latter, that would mean I would still only get three years of math). Maximum GPA: 4.66

4)Drop AP Literature, which is a ton of work and is extremely hard (2-3 people received an A), and replace it with PreCalculus or two easy semester long classes, such as painting and drawing (but for the latter, that would mean I would still only get three years of math). Maximum GPA: 4.66

5) Last resort option, tag on a PreCalculus class to my already rigorous schedule of five AP classes and religion. Keep in mind that I absolutely despise math (unless it’s applied to a science such as physics or chemistry) and I’m not very good at it either, so there’s a good chance that it will bring down my GPA. Maximum GPA: 4.71

Any help at all from anyone is appreciated.

I’ve been leaning toward option one myself, I’m just scared at what the colleges would think with only three years of math.

Here’s another option: Some universities offer independent study courses to high-school students — I actually did that and it wasn’t hard, but it did take a lot of the summer time. Maybe you could do Calculus rather than PreCalc, then you’d already be in a very intelligently studious mindset senior year.

RAIK!!!! I think you should give yourself a break…..if you will enjoy art, take it….also - I think that you shouldnt be so hung up on colleges/what they want. Maybe I’m clueless (i went years ago) but i went to claremont, had decent grades…wasnt so intense…..To me - youre taking a heavy load - if you love art - may be good to have a balance…..
MOSTLY THOUGH:
GOOD FOR YOU!!!! YOU are ON IT!!!!

no matter what we say tho - check the colleges you think you may want to go to and check their requirements….and then, mostly - FOLLOW YOUR HEART….too cool guy **High five!!

The high GPA should land you in most colleges even with out the math course, but I would still highly encourage it as it will help with any and all future science courses. Plus I wouldn’t encourage dumping AP physics, but I’m also slightly biased on that point.

Preferring to look at the big picture, you are certainly not in need of taking all AP courses. Your GPA is above excellent as it is, and I know plenty of highly intelligent students who don’t take nearly as many AP courses as you do… They still get into desirable colleges/universities.
So, I’m saying this to begin with: whatever happens, you’re gonna be fine. I swear, academics are overrated. But, I’ll try to be more helpful.
I’d drop AP Bio if I were you. After all, you’ll be taking two science classes if you don’t drop it - and most colleges do not require four years of science.
Yes, there is the risk of getting a tough teacher for PreCalc - but dropping a course just because of the teacher isn’t always the best idea. I did that with a class I had really wanted to take, after hearing the teacher gave students hell, and then he got sick and the class became much easier all of a sudden. At that point, I really regretted leaving it.
You never know what will happen, even with a “bad” teacher. Whatever grade you do receive with him, if you get him, your GPA will still be superb with consideration to the altitude of all your other grades.
