I Googled, “a cat has 9 lives” and copied a few random results here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat#Nine…
http://www.logoi.com/notes/cat-nine-l…
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Cats-1606/…

You should try using Google more often, it’s really handy.

Nine lives for a cat means:
They are very tough in taking, tougher then other animals. When it seems that they are dead, they are back on, on a “next life”.

One of my cat is dropped down from the third storey, on the concrete floor. He had only one hole in the palate (it was to sew), nothing broken, no internal injuries.
A dog e.g. would have been seriously injured.

This is because the terminal velocity for a cat is slower than the fatal speed.

This is also because it can flip in mid air as to always land on it’s feet due to it’s centre of gravity.

Because of both these reasons, the higher you throw a cat off a building, the more likely it will be that is survives because it gives it more time to right itself. Within reason of course.

While trying to find a good source for the history behind this saying I came across a really in depth explanation on Yahoo Answers. Check it out! — http://answers.yahoo.com/question/ind…
