Go Ten pin bowling there are plenty of people there. Join a swim club. See if there are any events in your area that you would like to attend and go.

Meeting friends in a new place is hard. It takes a lot of effort as YOU will most likely have to be the one who takes the initiative to talk to people. YOU have to talk to people and not be offended or take it personally if people are rude or don’t seem interested in talking with you. You must be persistent (in this effort, NOT with the same people who seem to have already dismissed you.) and not be discouraged. Joining clubs or going to events you are interested in is a good way to find people who have similar interests which helps provide the all important conversation topics. Social networking sites might be another idea, but in all honesty I have never used them so I am not 100% sure how effective they are. Just remember that you have value and strengths and keep on trying. Take care and best of luck.

Pick activities that you love to do.
Search your community for friendly groups or clubs you can join that love doing what you do.
