music help: yay! - Help.com

yay!

i’m on linux!
due to a programming error i am now on a random build of linux, was on windows xp. but i can’t work out how to get extra programs and modules installed. but at least i see my partitioned drive and have all my important stuff there, you know, music, films, all that stuff i own and have ripped ;)
can you install programs while using a ram (live CD) OS?
because the build is awesome, so small and fast, i wonder why i even bother with windows =(
should i install to hdd? or just use boot CD?

my usb is running off ntfs (or whatever). but the programs are downloaded and saved via linux (fat?). the OS is running in ram off a CD.
2.5gb ram and i have an operating system running it super fast, i was shocked, amazed and kinda wondered why windows eats so much hdd space and ram to do the same.
i use puppy and slax as my OS, slax is great looking, puppy is a little more basic gfx-wsie but works perfectly.
but linux is reading my partitioned drive perfectly. which shocked me aswell!
im nothing but impresses. except for the installing programs/modules. but thats only because im still learning. whats ya ideas?

You could go to one of the bix linux forums. (linuxforums.com or something) and ask if you can install software with one of those.

Zenwalk is a derivative of slackware like Slax is, and there is a live version. Slax is not maintained or updated, but Zenwalk has an active team of developers and an easy-to-use “download new software” function. I’d try going to their forum and seeing what they know. It’s bigger than dsl, puppy or slax but you’re not lacking memory.

I don’t know, I actually left someone’s computer with a live cd to run it and he didn’t have problems but it was kind of a unique situation and he only wanted to use the net.

I had systems that would boot either linux or windows xp, but you have to be careful to do that right if you want to use windows again. It’s not convenient or safe to have dual-boot on the same hard drive if you don’t do it exactly right, but separate hard drives works fine.

ok, i caved, i need my programs back so have re-installed windows xp =(
50000 files omg and 10 gb of space used, how rubbish is that?! i learnt alot in my little linux adventure ;)
i have learnt so much that i think linux rocks, way more than windows, and im going to partition my drive so i can have linux running if i get more problems, but i now have to learn how to partition my drive (which i found out has 3 partitions already! lol never knew that!) and find a good setup of linux, i’ll have a look into zenwalk, but as HDD installation and not live this time. thanks dood! =]
the only problem with booting off cd is how long it takes to boot and some stability issues!!! grrrrrrrr! but a fully functioning 300mb OS?!?! omg!!!!! impressed the hell out of me!!!! wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no one needs to lose all their hdd data just because windows has a problem! linux to the rescue!!!!!!!!!!

(p.s. they have a groovy penguin too!)

Yeah… I’m not a “fan” of Linux like so many are, and I don’t despise Microsoft or any of the other big companies (like so many do), but Linux definitely has many advantages. One is the worldview, since it’s what so many webservers on the internet use. The last time I looked, the easy-to-use popular distributions are Ubuntu and fedora. Europe seems to have more Debian users in general (Debian is what ubuntu is based on.)

If you install on separate partitions, I’d recommend reading at least few web-pages to make sure you’re doing it right. Windows has this thing of liking to be the only operating system.
