Find help: I just lost my job and have to pay back my student loans that are now in default. - Help.com

I just lost my job and have to pay back my student loans that are now in default.

They want me to pay back a certain amount a month and I cant pay it. Is there a way for me to get my payments lowered or some type of program that can help me until I find a job?

Call your student loan company and ask for a deferment. You’re eligible for a deferment and a forbearance.

Unemployment deferment lasts for 6 months and is renewable. That’s how I got out of making my payments when I was unemployed.

Call today, though, because if they go into collection, it’s harder to work with the loan holder.
