life help: About 6 months ago I moved to Messina Sicily to attend college. - Help.com

About 6 months ago I moved to Messina Sicily to attend college.

Before I moved , I would converse with my mom everyday, about politics, weather, whatever. However, the politics discussion often got really heated. Since the Presidential election is later this year, it is a common discussion in my family. I am a very “un-political” person. I don’t believe any of the crap that comes out of politicians mouths and I really don’t believe in running my life according to what the government says. My mom however, is a strict republican who believes everything the news reports. Since moving to Sicily, I can really see how much the media has an affect on citizens of the U.S. Any ideas on how I can really let my mom know what it’s like looking from the outside in. NOTE: I used to b just like my mom, until my brother was sent to Iraq in 2006, he still isn’t home. I get that it is his job, I just wish the media could cover some of the good things that the U.S is doing for Iraq. any opinions on this sore subject?

Does your mum plan on visiting you at all?

That would probably be the best way to get your point across, showing her first hand.

I dunno, it can be extremely difficult to change a persons opinion when they think like that. Particularly when that person is your parent.

Find news clips online and send her the web address or if you can find newspapers in English, cut those out and send them too her. Just keep giving her evidence, she can’t ignore it forever.

It can be very hard to change your mind about something you really believed in. My mother had voted christian-democrats for at least 20 years and she ignored most signs she got that their current ideas were incompatible with hers. She is very much into good care for the disabled, refugees, poor people, healthcare et cetera. At the time I am talking about, the christian-democrats (who are the large middle party in the Netherlands and almost always in government) had taken a shift to the right and supported laws she was vehemently opposed to. But even then, it was really hard for her to change her mind: she kept saying ‘but they cannot really be in favour of that, can they? No, I know that’s not what they want..’ Eventually, what changed her mind was not only the facts that kept coming in, but also the fact that I could point her to a number of other parties that were closer to her ideas.
Maybe that’s an approach you can take: rather than opposing her beliefs in the Republican party and Republican politicians, take a good look at her own beliefs, than point out when a Democrat supports policies that match her beliefs.
But be careful: she may need to believe some of the things she does in order to feel good about herself and about the fact that her son is in Iraq.

not really, I grew up in a Sicilian family, so whenever my dad yelled at me, he spoke in Italian, still don’t know everything he said. Basically, I know enough to understand my instructors at Culinary school, and enough to make it around the city. I’m hoping to learn more though.+
