I am babysitting an older dog with joint pain.

Can I give the dog any medicine to relieve the pain? The dog has not seen the vet in at least 7 years and I cannot take her to one. Thanks!

Why can’t you take her?

If it’s a question of finance, you can contact http://www.avma.org/ in the US or the PDSA in UK.

Why hasn’t this dog seen a vet in 7 years? Dogs should be getting regular check-ups, especially when they are older.

Glucosamin and Chondroitin supplements for dogs can help ease joint pain.

DO NOT give this dog Over the counter human pain meds! Shame on the owners for not addressing her arthritis!

Joint pain can be caused from a number of things ranging from arthritis to bone cancers, so it really needs a vet to check it. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID’s) are the most common, but you need a simple blood test to ensure that the liver and kidneys are up to processing the drugs. Aspirin is a type of NSAID, and it not wise to give to a dog with unknown health!

Glucosamine and Chondrotin are only useful if the dog has any salvageable cartilage left, they don’t address pain and are not useful if there is bone-on-bone arthritis.

In the mean time, you can try warm packs and massage to help with stiffness, but you really need to tell those owners to buck up and get this addressed. With the current therapies in veterinary medicine it is absolutely inexcusable for an animal to be suffering from chronic pain!
