Network- talk to everyone you know and ask them to check if they know of anyone hiring in your industry. Many jobs are found through friends and family.

Moving is hard at 53, but it might be time to broaden the search a little.

The federal government can offer assistance with food and housing, and its a good temporary tool to get you back on your feet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_stamps

Apply at every city, county, state and federal job in your area as well as temp agencies. Try hospitals. Don’t overstate your qualifications if going for a minimum wage job that will tide you over until you can use your skills.

I am in the same boat. I’ll be getting kicked out of the military due to alcohol rehab failure. My own fault. Way too dysfunctional. 3 years of purgatory down the tube.

I hope all works out for you. I wish I could help you. Look ANYWHERE for a job. Don’t be picky. And try to look for jobs through friends, etc. Can you get on unemployment?

Thank you all for your words of encouragement. I’ve never been in a situation like this before and the job market is not good. I have worked in the pleasure boating trade all of my life, and work in this field is slow anyway, this time of year, I am not educated beyond high school and so I am limited to a shrinking job market. I have calculated a minimum of wage, or hourly pay I must recieve in order to pay my rent, and the few jobs that are available (minimum wage) do not pay enough to cover that, let alone food, rent insurance, or fuel for the car, and lord save me that something major doesn’t come up like medical, and yes, I’m scared. My monthly rent is half of the current (low end) rent rate, I’m lucky for that. Again, thank you all for your support.

Eagle, have you thought about getting a roommate? Heck. I’ll be making some major life changes soon. And might need a reliable roommate. Ok, don’t take that too seriously. I don’t want to spook you. I understand you are scared. Here’s another option. Save up enough money and move to another country. Cananda has free health care, for instance. There are options, Eagle. Just keep your mind open. And look forward, positive. Envision what you want, and keep that goal in mind. I wish you the best of luck.
