hey guys, just a quick question.

iam thinking about becomming a doctor in a hospital ( like jd from scrubs ) i have always thought about that but havn’t ever gone for it. so i was wondering if some1 could help me out. iam 18 and my gcse are terrible there all e or f apart from P.E wich is a c. i found school really rubbish and i didn’t do anything to learn apart from p.e as i found it intresting. i was wondering if there is anyway of becommming 1 evan though i have screwed my life over by school ways, like if i went to collage or uni to learn certain subjects to progress to doctor stage or weather i could join the army medical side and myb have the qualifications from that. this is what i would get if i joined the army medical side

Phase one
A 12-week medical package, a modulated theory and practical programme, with confirmation and testing after each module.

Phase two
A four-week medical placement for practical experience working in medical centre and ambulance station environments. This stage involves medical administration as well as hands-on experience and training.

Phase three
Confirmation of all new skills, including signals training, field hygiene skills, pharmacy and medical administration and the field medical skills package.

On completion of trade training, CMTs are awarded Class 2 before joining a Medical Regiment or Field Hospital. Class 1 is available after 18 months of practical experience within a field medical unit. That could involve anything from operating with an armoured battlegroup to providing medical cover for helicopter crews. Every graduation of Class is accompanied by an increase in both salary and responsibility.

What Qualifications Could I Get?

NVQ and City & Guilds Certification and the Diploma in Emergency and Primary Health Care 5403 are available.

sorry its long but any help would be fantasitic thanks!

The military (i’m guessing you mean British since you mention GCSEs) can be a good option to get qualifications but they may expect you to have some qualifications already. To become a combat medic for example I think you need 5 GCSEs. They have a wide range of medical tech jobs you can get with minimal qualifications. To work as a doctor you need an apropriate degree and they have some . Once leaving the army you may be able to get on a course using your qualifications and experience (talk to a university admissions tutor for more information.) If you’ve got your heart set on becoming a doctor you could retake your GCSEs tke some A levels and try to get the army to sponsor you through a degree ad a medical doctor. Other options are to go to a college which provides an acess course (normally one or two years) and then get a degree from there or take a corespondance degree with someone like the Open University (no prior qualifications required - but difficult) in biology or a related field and take further univerdity training to get an MD.

well the army thing i posted up was for a combat medic, and it requires no grades thats why iam thinking of that one. as i thought id be doing something i liked getting payed for it and maybe becomming a doctor when i leave. i really wana leave the collage etc as a last resort as i would have to get a part time job and there is no part time job i like. i worked at woolworths for 1 year and i dispised every second of it. same thing every day over and over. maybe if you could check the website www.armyjobs.mod.uk and let me no if any of them would help, u dont have to but i would b very thankful

If your spelling is any indication, you should not be trusted with the lives of others.

It certainly seems like a fairly good option but bear in mind that the military is a whole life not just a job. You will have to do whatever you are told without question and will have to sign your life away for four years. In adition combat medics are armed and expected to kill if required - easy to forget what the army actually does isn’t it! Bearing in mind our trigger happy government I would not advise a military career at this time. Still it’s worth going to a recruitment office if you’re interested they will be able to give you more detailed job descriptions than the website. Just don’t expect them to tell the truth all the time, they’re not trying to reruit you for your benefit.

I’ve noticed lately that a lot of people have become interested in being a doctor ever since scrubs became popular. As entertaining as the show is, being a real doctor is a lot different from the show. It’s stressful challenging and taxing. I’m not saying that scrubs is the reason you want to be a doctor. i just think its important to see what your getting into. maybe shadow a doctor for awhile, see what its really like ya know?

I don’t know… one of my friends is a doctor out of university and starting his in-hospital training and the way he describes it is exactly like scrubs, and that’s BAD!!!* After years of training in theory suddenly they have to start learning all over agin, novice docs really do hide when the crash alarm sounds to avoid being first on scene. They can tell you everything about, say, diamorphine: how to administer it, side-effects, what it does to the body and how it does it, how it’s produced, what it costs, dangers and dosage levels but they’ve never stuck a needle in anybody yet. Good for comedy writers but it would be horrible to be one of the characters.

*multiple exclamaition points are a sure sign of a diseased mind

I always thought scrubs was so popular was because of the drama and comedy that unfolds between the characters. I cant remember the last time someone watched scrubs to watch them administer Diamorawhateverphine or to watch people die after people tirelessly try to save them.
