We walk past each other.
Two fragrances collide in our wake.
Frigid
warm.
For an instant they are indistinguishable, they become unified,
entangled in their very differences. For an instant they are neutral.
For a heartbeat we are
one.
Two
feel the same pulse skip, the blood pause for one frame.
You stop. I look back.
Our eyes lock, our senses melt. There is a mutual understanding,
an unwarranted trust. We exchange a faith that life is fluid, that
fate is your own. In that instant, I have taken a part of you, as
you have with I. The antidote to our emptiness has become
each other, nothing but a poison moments earlier.
The trance is broken. As quickly as they met, the aromas
dissipate. They unravel, blinded to the idea they ever met.
We head our separate ways.
Eyes still watch the sidewalk, but the world seems brighter.
I have changed, but cannot see it. Thoughts pour through
my head, racing, trying to keep up. But they never can.
I am a million miles away. I am wherever I want.
I am whoever I want. I am me.
I crack a smile.
And walk past another.
