Year help: I am a mother of a young adult male who has narcolepsy. - Help.com

This post left anonymously

I am a mother of a young adult male who has narcolepsy.

He’s had it for almost 20 years. From what I know he has taken everything under the sun doctors have to treat narcolepsy with. These drugs are having little effect, if any, on him anymore so he is taking them in higher doses. I know this means addiction and over-dosing . I want to know what others are “safely” taking and how they are coping with this aweful problem.

I have a friend who suffers from narcolepsy, and tried lots of different medications until recently, when she discovered one that actually worked for her. Don’t give up!

I have narcolepsy with cataplexy quite severely. I am on provigil, lexapro, impram and xyrem. If he has cataplexy severly I would definetly suggest xyrem although it is a very serious drug. None of the drugs used to treat any of the symptoms are fun..and they tend to work against eachother. It took me over 2 years to finally get stabalized on a combination of meds I can function on. However, everyday is different and we narcoleptics have our good days and bad. Would you mind telling me more about his case? Plus how old is he? I’m only 20, and I know it is VERY theraputic to be able to talk to someone who understands. But everyone is different and thats also the case with narcolepsy. You have to keep trying new things…somethings might not start working right away either. But there is hope..believe me i know been there and done that.
