The latest version of AVG has this link checker that can seriously use up bandwidth. I recommend Avast. http://www.avast.com/

AVG 8.5 has sadly evolved into “bloatware”, even though the many new features they are introducing are worthwhile, in particular their new heuristic engine (i.e. detecting still unknown viruses).
For a “free” solution avast! has a very high detection rate and is very light on system resources. You could even use it on Windows 95! For a “security suite” free solution you could try Comodo Firewall + AntiVirus, even though the mix solution of avast! antivirus and Comodo’s firewall would be far better.
If you decide to go for the mixed solution, make sure to disable the antivirus when installing Comodo’s suite. Two antivirus software products would spend your system resources fighting each other!
If you have allocated a budget for your computer security, you might want to try Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.
Hope it helps
