Is it just me, or does anyone else find it appalling

that individuals at the college level still take reading and writing as well as basic arithmetic? I visit a local community college looking for a friend and I see people taking classes for those extremely basic skills. I was a bit shocked. Mind you they offer proper courses like Calculus and Physics. It seems a bit sad and kind of discouraging to know that.

i had to take a basic writing and reading class my first year, simply because it was required of me. and some majors require you to get some credits in math so many people choose to do the lowest level possible to get their credits.

I think it’s appalling that most people NEED to take those courses, if that’s what you mean. I think it’s good that at least some of the people who need to take those courses actually do.

what would really shock you and explain the reason for the classes is that you would think that every school has the same level of instruction for basic classes, but they don’t always measure up. I felt fortunate after seeing what some curriculum taught in other schools.

I think the level of education has decreased because the emphasis is gone to learn.
Some students take school seriously and others don’t. The classes are there so that when a student demonstrates that they don’t measure up, they have an opportunity to learn it over again. If you look at all of the problems at home just from this site you can also see that learning in school might be difficult. So it is a good thing that the classes are offered in college.

That was very insightful Larry G, you’ve actually broadened my view with that comment.
