Love help: Is this weight loss goal too unreasonable? - Help.com

Is this weight loss goal too unreasonable?

I want to join the AFROTC and receive a scholarship. One of my biggest obstacles is the maximum weight requirement. I would have to loose 65 lbs.
The weigh ins are in December (I don’t know the exact date, but I’m assuming that it is early December, so I’m not including December in my calculations) If I wanted to get the scholarship this year I would have to loose an average of 3.2 lbs a week. (a daily calorie deficit of 1590 calories).

This is my first year in college, and I’ve never had a steady job. Do you think that taking on the goal of being able to qualify for the scholarship by December to be too much? I know I am capable of loosing that much, but this plan pushes it and it allows very little room for mistake. At the same time I have to increase my physical ability to pass the fitness test. By itself, I believe I am very capable of doing that.

I have my first year of college covered financially speaking. I can probably handle it with a part time job. However, I do expect to deplete most of my saving my first year- and I’m particularly worried about meeting the financial responsibility next year. This scholarship would be a lifesaver. However, I’m wondering if it might be more reasonable to spend more energy focused on getting other scholarships and financial aid.

No matter the outcome of my decision here, I will do AFROTC. It is only a matter if I try for this year, or next year. I would love some advice- and I know this is a long post.

I’ve have been considering it. One of the reasons for the AFROTC is that I can get into the technical side. (I’m going into computer science) and I’ll be able to get experience in my field, good benefits, and they’ll pay for my college. I have researched it and I have a particular scholarship that I’m looking for- that will keep me from having to choose between following orders or following my conscious. There is the risk that I’d be the one to press the button- but it is rather unlikely.

3 lbs a week aren’t bad at all. i think it’s only unhealthy if you lose like 5+ lbs a week. go for it!

It…well…if you are still eating at least 1200 cals a day it’s healthy, which means you have to exercise a lot. And take vitamins. Even so, it won’t kill you, but it won’t be something that a doctor would recommend.

I’ve lost 35 pounds since January, and it’s been a tough ride. But something that really helped was becoming vegetarian.

I don’t think that it is unhealthy.

This is what it looks like

I would cut about 900 calories through diet (at about 1,200 calories intake)
Then I would have about 600 calories a day to exercise off. which is about 2 and 1/2 hours of walking 3mph (for me, that is a medium fast pace- not cardio, but faster than my average pace- I would vary in higher intensity and lower intensity exercises)

The problem is: 14 hours a week in school, 28 hours studying (2 hours for every hour of class), 40 hours of work, plus 17.5 hours of exercise, 42 hours of sleep.

This leaves me an average of 3 hours 45 minutes a day for everything else. Getting ready in the morning, transportation (I don’t have a car- so this is a big chunk), eating, etc. I am worried about my stress levels.

I don’t think any of you provided realistic answers, sorry. You can try to plan a schedule to a “t” but life doesn’t always work that way. I’m a former high school wrestler, and cutting weight at 3.2 lbs/week is UNHEALTHY. Sorry, there’s no miracle diet or program. Seriously, you’ll literally die if you try to lose 3.2 lbs/week–very unhealthy–indeed. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I’m not arguing. However, your situation is slightly different. You can loose a lot more weight when you are overweight- and not a fit, high school wrestler. Even at my “goal weight” (goal weight for now) I’d still be 35lbs overweight. At my current weight I’ve been able to loose about a lb a day of 90% fat. (I watch that closely, even if it doesn’t matter)…

But I agree with you on planning life to a “t” The tighter I make things the more likely I am to fail at them.
